  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) April 11, 2012 - inSHAPE Fitness has partnered with The Institute for Leadership as part of an innovative pilot program to help people enrolled in the Faith Fights Diabetes program to learn the basics of exercising in a short, 10-minute routine that can be done safely in the comfort of their own homes.

Kim Watkins, co-founder and head trainer of the inSHAPE Fitness, says "by helping program participants learn the basic principles of posture, control, and simple moves, they can safely do these exercises in their own home as we help them make the transition from sedentary lifestyles without the need of a gym or expensive equipment."

The Rev. Michel Faulkner, founder and president of the Institute For Leadership, which runs the successful Faith Fights Diabetes Program designed to give participants the tools to manage the disease, said he was excited about the potential of the pilot program.

"Through these simple fitness and wellness moves designed by Kim and her inSHAPE team, we can offer participants more healthy options by teaching them ways to get moving that are safe, simple and fun," Faulkner said. "Our hope is that they will continue this routine and adopt healthier lifestyles that will help reverse their symptoms of diabetes and prevent avoidable complications such as blindness, amputations, cardiovascular and kidney disease."

Under the IFL's Faith Fights Diabetes program, started with a grant from the New York State Health Foundation as part of their statewide Diabetes Campaign, participants complete a six-week training session conducted at places of worship and community centers to learn about diet, exercise and how to better manage their diabetes to live healthier lives.

To date, inSHAPE Fitness has completed five fitness programs with Faith Fights Diabetes and will continue the innovative pilot program throughout the spring season. The program aims to equip those who have been identified as "high risk" for diabetes and those with diabetes, within local places of worship, with the necessary tools needed to live healthier and longer lives.

Watkins said: "Community groups are the lifeblood of social change in our city, so what better way to help the greatest number of motivated individuals than in their local places of worship. Pastor Faulkner and I worked together two years ago when he trained for the NYC Marathon, so when the opportunity came up for inSHAPE to partner with the IFL's Faith Fights Diabetes program, I jumped at the chance."

The mission of the Institute For Leadership is to make tomorrow better by making better leaders today. To that end, the IFL has taken on challenges where some of society's most difficult problems exist in the areas of job creation, life, financial literacy and health. Their largest and most comprehensive project is the Faith Fight Diabetes initiative as part of their statewide campaign to reach people where they live, work and worship with life-saving information. To date, the IFL has trained more than 200 Community Heath Workers and engaged nearly 2,000 participants in this six-week program.

My Pastor Saved My Life was a social marketing campaign sponsored by the state diabetes campaign to engage and activate New York State faith-based leaders in the fight against diabetes. The campaign and website were designed to provide leaders with information, resources and support to help improve diabetes prevention and care for members of their congregations.

Founded in 1997, inSHAPE Fitness has created a world where it's cooler NOT to be a member of the gym, where people can live healthy, active lives without the use of fancy equipment and without the waste of time it takes to travel to and from an exercise facility. inSHAPE works with clients to devise and deliver practical and efficient exercise programming based on logistics, abilities, goals, and schedules. inSHAPE is also the creator of the GO Bandô, a portable mini-resistance band, which is revolutionizing the way people attack their in-home strength routines.
