  • (1888PressRelease) February 24, 2012 - Cincinnati, OH - IGEL Technology, one of the world's leading thin client manufacturers, has updated its full range of thin clients to include the latest software clients, protocols, and protocol extensions for accessing centralized IT and cloud infrastructures. Effective immediately, all three operating systems available from IGEL (IGEL Linux, Microsoft Windows Embedded Standard 7 and Microsoft Windows Embedded Standard 2009) now have the newest versions of Citrix ICA Receiver and VMware View Client, while the Microsoft RemoteFX client for IGEL Linux adds supports for USB redirection. With these enhancements, IGEL has once again improved the multimedia performance and usability of its devices.

All IGEL Universal Desktop thin clients now have the latest protocol versions for accessing virtualized applications and desktops delivered using Citrix XenApp and Citrix XenDesktop. Among other things, this means that IGEL customers can now leverage the new decoder available for rendering HDX 3D Pro graphics. This improvement adds streaming support for rich, high-fidelity, professional-grade 3D graphics delivered from server-centric environments, even over low-bandwidth networks. The latest ICA protocol versions also enhances support of multi-view setups, Flash streaming (HDX MediaStream Flash Redirection), optimized video transmission from webcams (HDX RealTime Webcam Video Compression), as well as support for a new audio subsystem on IGEL Linux. Specific improvements in the Citrix Receiver for Windows include support for Microsoft RemoteFX and Windows Aero.

Client-side Caching: VMware View 5 Client
All Windows-based IGEL models come with the new VMware View 5 client, which adds support for delivering 3D and Windows Aero visual effects over a WAN. IGEL improved the efficiency and performance for playing multimedia content by adding support for client-side caching, which allows local storage and retrieval of graphics data at the thin client device level. What's more, IGEL will integrate the VMware View 5 client into IGEL Linux shortly after VMware releases the View 5 Client for Linux, scheduled in the second quarter of 2012.

Microsoft RemoteFX for IGEL Linux: USB and Multimedia Redirection
By developing its own Microsoft RemoteFX feature for IGEL Linux, a feature that has been certified by Microsoft, IGEL continued to demonstrate its extraordinary R&D capabilities. Now IGEL has taken its RemoteFX for IGEL Linux a step further. In addition to multimedia redirection, IGEL's Linux-based RemoteFX solution now supports USB redirection, which permits virtualized access to local USB devices for applications such as smartphone synchronization, operation of audio devices and headsets, and smartcard-based authentication. Furthermore, IGEL will be adding support for isochronous USB devices, such as webcams or document scanners, in future releases of its thin client firmware.

"Our latest enhancements to our firmware allow even better utilization of the hardware capabilities available in our thin clients," explains Florian Spatz, Product Marketing Manager at IGEL. "We're very pleased to be able to offer our customers an even better user experience and greater efficiency with thin client computing."
