  • Philadelphia, PA-NJ (1888PressRelease) September 21, 2011 - Hollister Creative, a Philadelphia educational publishing company, was chosen this fall to produce a classroom program on bullying for the Detroit Tigers Major League Baseball team and Detroit Newspapers In Education. The program - "Detroit Tigers Go to Bat for Fair Play" - uses the appeal of baseball and Tigers players to teach students strategies for dealing with bullies and for reducing incidents of bullying in schools.

The 12-page, full-color curriculum stressed that everyone has a role to play to stop bullying, and examined the roles that respect, leadership and character play in dealing with bullying and other problems. Interviews with Tigers players offered anti-bullying strategies drawn from real life, while other lessons focused on how bullying affects both participants and non-participants, why people become bullies and how cyber-bullying has spread the problem electronically.

Practical advice for dealing with bullies was detailed in "The Paws Plan for Fair Play," named for the Tigers' mascot Paws. The curriculum was accompanied by a color classroom poster created by Hollister that offered anti-bullying advice for display throughout the school year. The program concluded by offering students a selection of books on bullying themes and asking them to "Take the Tigers Pledge to Stop Bullying."

This year's program, launched just after the Tigers clinched the Central Division championship in the American League, is the seventh Hollister has created for the Tigers, Detroit Newspapers and the Michigan K.I.D.S. non-profit foundation. Others for the Tigers have included programs on Reading, Fitness, Respect, Teamwork and Character Education.

Hollister Creative has also worked with the Philadelphia Phillies, Eagles, Sixers, Flyers, Soul, Kixx and Wings, creating educational programs in partnership with The Philadelphia Inquirer. Hollister also has created education programs for the Detroit Lions, Red Wings and Pistons and the athletic programs at the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University.

The Detroit Tigers "Go to Bat for Fair Play" program was written by Hollister Creative editorial director Peter Landry and designed by graphic designer Jon Barthmus.
