  • (1888PressRelease) September 13, 2013 - HK Equity Fund: Samsung's Galaxy Gear Smartwatch - the Korean tech giant's first major push into the wearable technology space - was unveiled last week at the IFA consumer electronics trade show in Berlin, Germany to mixed response from trade and consumers alike.

In essence, the device is a watch that must be linked with a Samsung smartphone in order to derive the full benefit of its functionality. It offers the facility to pick up notifications, control playback of music and comes with a 1.9 megapixel camera, a speaker and 2 microphones which facilitates the making and taking of calls as well as allowing users to shoot short videos.

The device will be launched in a number of countries including the US during October retailing at $299. A HK Equity Fund technology researcher said, "We think the accessory is rather ambitiously priced given its reliance on a smartphone for much of its functionality. It can't make standalone calls and the 1.6 inch screen doesn't endow the device with the scope to do very much."

Despite the criticism, the researcher suggested that the device would likely sell 'reasonably well' to Samsung's more ardent, top tier customer base but cautioned that it could not be seen as a category-defining technology development "like an iPad, for instance".

The HK Equity Fund researcher said that Samsung had scored a minor victory in releasing the Galaxy Gear ahead of any offering from its rival Apple but added that he expected a competing product from the Cupertino-based tech innovator to prove more exciting.

HK Equity Fund says it maintains its buy rating on Samsung stock.
