  • Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL (1888PressRelease) March 06, 2020 - Members of the community who are making strides in the battle against drug abuse and drug addiction will be honored on Saturday April 25th, when the Foundation for a Drug-Free World’s Florida Chapter will present their annual Drug-Free Heroes Awards Banquet. The event begins at 5:30 and includes a complimentary buffet dinner and live entertainment. The event is being held at the Fort Harrison, the international religious retreat for the Church of Scientology. There is no cost to attend.

“Statistics on drug abuse are frustrating,” said Julieta Santagostino, the President of the Foundation. “Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 130 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose. In Pinellas County, the number of opioid-related overdose deaths has increased by 78% between 2015 and 2018. More than one person in Pinellas County dies every 37 hours from an opioid-related overdose.”

“But there are people who are making a difference,” said Ms. Santagostino, “and we are going to validate the victories and hopefully inspire others to join in this fight.”

The Foundation for a Drug Free World disseminates the Truth About Drugs drug education program. This program utilizes drug education booklets, public service announcements and a feature-length documentary where former addicts vividly describe the drugs they were addicted to, how their addictions crippled their lives and how they were able to get the help they needed.

Those being acknowledged on April the 25th have utilized the Drug Free World Program to help educate people so that they are steered away from drug abuse.

“The booklets were extremely well done,” said a health teacher who has been using the program with her students. “They [students] were blown away with the stories that addicts shared in the booklets. It gave them a good picture of the actual consequences of drug use. Some of them were able to open up about their parents’ drug use. I am amazed that there is such a program out there that is FREE and so informative. It’s all there.”

    ABOUT DRUG FREE WORLD
The Foundation for a Drug-Free World is a nonprofit public benefit corporation that empowers youth and adults with factual information about drugs so they can make informed decisions and live drug-free. Through a worldwide network of volunteers, 50 million of drug prevention booklets have been distributed, tens of thousands of drug awareness events have been held in some 180 countries and Truth About Drugs public service announcements have been aired on more than 500 television stations. These materials and activities have helped people around the world learn about the destructive side effects of drugs and thereby make the decision for themselves to not use them.

Scientology founder and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard wrote “Research has demonstrated that the single most destructive element present in our current culture is drugs.” Mr. Hubbard’s research in this field brought unparalleled drug rehabilitation solutions to the world. This, in turn, galvanized the Church and Scientologists to initiate the Truth About Drugs, a secular program through which they have worked with like-minded organizations for more than two decades to empower the millions with the truth about drugs.
