  • Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill, NC-SC (1888PressRelease) December 22, 2010 - Charlotte, NC: Hendrick Lexus (www.HendrickLexus.com) invites members of the community to join them in assisting the Men's Shelter of Charlotte gather donations and meet the goals of a campaign to feed hungry homeless men in need (www.mensshelterofcharlotte.org).

Sales Consultant Jay Miano says his team learned about the campaign to raise 2,000 pounds of old-fashioned oatmeal through a news story run by the Charlotte Observer earlier this month, which documented the initiatives of the Men's Shelter to feed and shelter an average of 600 homeless men every day. Since the story was published, the public has responded by donating 17 times the original goal, equaling 35,000 pounds of oats.

Employees at the dealership have purchased oatmeal, which they are temporarily placing under the store's Christmas tree. "Their campaign to raise public donations totaling one ton of oatmeal to feed these men a daily hot breakfast touched our hearts and we felt compelled to respond," says Miano. "Our goal is to spread the word, and to encourage our fellow employees, customers and the general public to help us help the shelter go beyond their goal to help our neighbors in need. It's as simple as dropping off old-fashioned oatmeal at the dealership."

The Men's Shelter assists unaccompanied adult men experiencing homelessness in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg County area by providing safe emergency shelter and meeting basic needs. Organizers say old-fashioned oatmeal is critical to the hot breakfast program they initiated to nourish the unattended men who rely on manual-labor jobs for income.

"We're very thankful to Hendrick Lexus for partnering with the Men's Shelter to provide for the most basic of needs of Charlotte's homeless men," says Carson Dean, Executive Director of the Men's Shelter of Charlotte. "Donations of these food items and financial support will ensure that each of our homeless guests receives safe shelter and hot, nutritious meals."

In addition to oatmeal, the Men's Shelter is also in need of parboiled rice, sugar, grits and dry cereal, preferably in large sizes. In addition to these goods, the dealership is also accepting financial donations. Money raised will go towards fresh food purchases, clean sheets, utility bills, and other services. All checks should be made payable to "The Men's Shelter of Charlotte." All donations can be dropped off at Hendrick Lexus, located at 6025 East Independence Boulverard in Charlotte.
