Harris Corporation Compact Video Headend Solutions Reduce Capital, Support Growth for Over-The-Air Broadcasters Worldwide

Top Quote At the 2012 NAB Show, Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) showcased complete over-the-air digital television (DTV) solutions that help local, regional and national broadcasters make the best possible use of terrestrial spectrum to support new digital services for viewers — while minimizing infrastructure, energy use and total cost of ownership. • (1888PressRelease) April 17, 2012 - Last summer, Harris introduced its complete over-the-air DTV solution for the DVB-T2 standard, which is popular in Europe, Russia, Africa and other international regions. At 2012 NAB, Harris introduced complete solutions for other leading DTV standards, including ATSC in the United States and ISDB-Tb in Brazil.

The complete solutions for all three standards include the Harris® Selenio™ media convergence platform, the industry's most compact video headend; Harris® Maxiva™ UHF and Platinum™ VHF digital transmitters covering high- and low-power operations; and the Harris® Videotek® MSA Series of test and measurement solutions for standards compliance.

Local ATSC broadcasters especially benefit from more intelligent bandwidth management using Selenio that allows them to easily add new services, including mobile DTV channels. Robert Castillo, director of engineering for WJZY-TV in Charlotte, uses Selenio to encode one high-definition, two standard definition and two mobile DTV over-the-air channels — and combine, or "multiplex," the encoded channels into a single stream to maximize spectrum efficiency.

"Selenio's statistical multiplexing cleverly analyzes our bandwidth demands and manages allocation to each of the encoded signals," said Castillo. "This results in a very efficient ATSC transport stream, and Selenio manages the entire over-the-air payload without compromising picture quality."

    New Features
As with last year's DVB-T2 solution, new built-in Selenio upgrades eliminate separate "gateway" technologies in ISDB-Tb video headends — instead offering direct adaptation to DTV transmitters. This minimizes infrastructure and reduces interoperability issues in the signal path, while enabling broadcasters to more easily distribute programming across large transmission networks. NAB also marks the introduction of MSA Series compatibility with the ISDB-Tb standard.

Harris will demonstrate its complete solution with several transmitter models, including the energy- and space-efficient Maxiva Compact Class — a low-power, gap filler transmitter that especially helps ATSC broadcasters increase mobile DTV coverage in local markets.

"Harris offers the industry's only true integrated transmission solution for DTV broadcasters that ensures true interoperability through the entire DTV air chain," said Harris Morris, president, Harris Broadcast Communications. "The efficiency of the total solution is tailor-made for broadcasters looking to quickly and affordably launch new digital services that keep viewers tuned in."
