  • (1888PressRelease) December 10, 2010 - Gwent-based family butcher, Douglas Willis has proved itself a 'cut' above the rest, having been named the Best in Wales at the annual Butcher's Shop of the Year Awards 2010.

The awards, which are organised annually by Meat Trades Journal are hosted at the Sheraton Park Lane Hotel and aim to highlight some of the best businesses in butchery.

Founded over sixty years ago by Douglas Willis, who still plays an active role in the business, the company has further expanded its retail empire in the last year, doubling the size of its premises at the Parade, Cwmbran Shopping.

Following an investment of £250,000, the shop next door to the original premises was fully refurbished to incorporate a sandwich and baguette serving area, a hot counter featuring a selection of cooked products, as well as cheeses, olives and cold meats in the deli section, a coffee station and also a noodle bar, serving options from an extensive menu, freshly prepared in front of customers as they wait.

This runs alongside the traditional butchers' shop and food outlet selling the company's quality fresh meat product, homemade pies and cooked joints. Douglas Willis also has successful outlet at Llanyrafon Square, Cwmbran.

It was the company's vision in spotting a gap in the market and expanding to appeal to a broader range of consumer that played a large part in its recognition by such a respected industry title.

Meat Trades Journal Editor Ed Bedington said of Douglas Willis:

"The butcher's passion and enthusiasm for the business shines through on every level. They set standards in Wales that other butchers would do well to follow.

"Particularly impressive is the shop's effort to cater for all tastes. This looks an outstanding shop, even in the midst of 120 shops in the same precinct, it really stands out."

Accepting the award, Douglas Willis retail director Peter Willis said:

"It's fantastic to be recognised within the industry in this way and it really is testament to the hard work and dedication of the team we have working with us here at Douglas Willis.

"As a company, we're very aware of the need to diversify and keep coming up with new ideas in order to appeal to customers old and new and we've had a fantastic response to the changes and new additions to our product ranges that we've introduced in the last couple of years.

"We're focusing heavily on the farming side of our family business at the moment, helping to guarantee that we can continue to supply the shops with the quality meat products our customers expect and we will also be taking on more staff in the new year in order to cope with demand.

"It's been a very exciting time for the business and to win this award when up against some really tough competition from across Wales really is the icing on the cake - we're absolutely delighted."
