We saw the likes of Pair, Cupple, Avocado, Between, Lovebyte, and Kahnoodle promising new ways to enhance interpersonal communication with social networks built for two. They're all predictably cuddly and brimming with functionality - but do they all ignore a fundamental truth? The developers GoodBoy, a new app for couples, think so.
"Our starting point was as obvious as it was radical: men and women are different." says Nick Clarey one of the founders of The Refinery, the company behind 'GoodBoy'. "The couple's apps out there seem to be targeted at teenagers in love. We wanted an app for grown ups - people who understand that real relationships are about give and take".
Styled like a 1950's style board game, GoodBoy invites us to play with gender stereotypes. Ladies take the role of the bank manager and can debit and credit GoodBucks (the currency used in the game) as she sees fit. Gentlemen have to earn GoodBucks by completing tasks but can also spend them by claiming rewards.
Both players negotiate the values of tasks and rewards by making bids using GoodBucks. The current balance is displayed on a large central dial on both phones allowing each player to gauge how things are going. "We joke that GoodBoy offers 'man training' for the ladies and 'priceless insight into the female mind' for the gentlemen. Many would say that's politically incorrect but that exactly what makes it fun to play. Couples will no doubt gain new insights into each other when playing - which is sure to make their relationship more interesting. Essentially, it's a new channel for couples to talk about what they want and how they value everyday things in a relationship" says Matthew Byrne, another of the creators of the app.
He continues, "It works both ways. The guy at the bar who gets a notification that he has lost a ton of GoodBucks for being late, could go on to earn them back and claim a reward - like watching football all afternoon - with no arguments. And the woman, who hates socks left on the floor but loves a cup of tea in the morning, can make her feelings known in a way that gets noticed".
With its distinct character, tongue-in-cheek attitude, and irresistible charm this could well be the start of a beautiful relationship app.
