  • (1888PressRelease) November 23, 2010 - Gleneagles Kuala Lumpur hosted two live neurovascular surgeries at the 8th Asian Congress of Neurosurgical Surgeons pre-workshop today. The surgeries were performed by renowned neurosurgeon, Professor Michael K. Morgan.

Professor Morgan, who has an impressive background in cerebrovascular surgery and research, recently collaborated with Gleneagles Kuala Lumpur to provide high-end neurosurgical treatment here.

Through the collaboration which was sealed early this year between Gleneagles Kuala Lumpur and Macquarie Neurosurgery, Australia, Professor Morgan will now be able to share his expertise here.

Professor Morgan who was assisted by Gleneagles Kuala Lumpur's Consultant Neurosurgeon, Dr. Jagdeep Singh, conducted two live surgeries; the first on Arterial Venus Malformation and the second on Aneurysm.

"Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a collection of abnormal blood vessels which can occur in the brain. This condition can present with sudden haemorrhage or seizures. Often the treatment can be very complicated and may involve a variety of methods," explained Professor Morgan.

"Diagnosis of an AVM is done by performing an angiogram and MRI scans. If left untreated, a repeated haemorrhage could be devastating. The treatment option for AVM includes surgery or radiation therapy.

Embolization, that is, cutting off the blood supply to the AVM can be used in addition to either. These treatment options could be used individually or in some cases, patients may require a combined treatment option."

When asked about aneurysm, Professor Morgan explained that a ruptured cerebral aneurysm is a life threatening condition. It usually presents with a history of sudden onset severe headaches, nausea, vomiting and stiffness in the neck.

Investigation and treatment of this condition needs to be performed urgently as a repeated rupture could cause severe injury to the brain or even death.

"Investigation of a patient with a suspected rupture of an aneurysm includes a CT scan to identify presence of bleeding in the brain. The patient will require an angiogram to diagnose the presence of an aneurysm," said Professor Morgan.

He added that treatment of an aneurysm will depend on many factors including location, size and morphology of the aneurysm. Surgery has been the main method in treating aneurysm for over 50 years.

Today, the technique of surgery has advanced with the use of high powered microscopes and intraoperative angiogram which improves patient outcome and makes treatment successful.

Chief Executive Officer of Gleneagles Kuala Lumpur, Amir Firdaus Abdullah
