  • Atlanta, GA (1888PressRelease) February 18, 2011 - Commissioners today accepted donations from two organizations, one that will help with transportation needs for seniors and persons with disabilities and another that brings an interactive learning exhibit to Gwinnett County.

The Friends of Gwinnett Senior Services donated $39,371 to be used for the Transportation Voucher Program in Gwinnett. Recently, federal funds were granted from the New Freedom Act to support a limited number of seniors and persons with disabilities with vouchers to support the cost of transportation for essential trips with priority given to medical appointments and medical procedures. Public transportation, including paratransit, is limited to certain corridors in the county and cannot meet the transportation needs for all those who need special transportation. This federal grant required a matching donation, and the Friends of Gwinnett Senior Services stepped in to allow the opportunity for Gwinnett County to receive these funds.

The second donation came from the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center Foundation, a 501c3 organization that supports the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center in its mission to provide a high-tech cultural center known for its hands-on science exhibits and quality educational programming that inspire visitors to become better stewards of the environment. The Foundation, in partnership with Holtkamp Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc., presented Gwinnett County with a $12,840 check to fund the Center's Your House, My House exhibit. This hands-on traveling exhibit, which is open now through April 16, helps visitors understand how geography, climate and culture shape the way people live around the globe by allowing them to journey into homes from around the world.
