  • Fayetteville, NC (1888PressRelease) May 14, 2017 - We are a looking to assist more of the homeless veterans of our area. We believe in taking action with urgency in order to raise public awareness about the most pressing issues affecting the lives of men and women who served in the U.S. armed forces.

Currently we provide personal items' (clothing, food, personal hygiene products, blankets, tents, coolers, candles, flash lights...). These items come from yard sale purchases, church members, neighbors, and organizations in the area. Most of the homeless we see are veterans; however after the devastation of Matthew we are now seeing more families, and young people who were left homeless from the flooding.

With our mission always in mind, we work tirelessly to improve the lives of military veteran and others in homeless camps, under bridges, living around the banks of the river and other areas around Fayetteville NC. Our teams of dedicated volunteers are committed to this cause and will continue to work to enhance the lives of the homeless each and every day.

Our current need is to prepare for the heat of the summer. We will use this fund to purchase bottled water, instant meals, tents, coolers, as well as other personal items (see list below). Once we have purchased items we go out to the homeless camps.
We have found that working one on one gives us the best chance of helping those that truly need the help.

We provide what they honestly need and will take. Many times we find that even though we have something we believe someone needs, they know someone that needs it more. This word of mouth has provided us with locations of more homeless camps, and sometimes someone new to being homeless.

The following list is the type of items we provide based on the time of year and what we have on hand:

Hygiene: shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, chap stick, lotion, wash cloth, floss, toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash (alcohol-free), hair brushes (compact), individual packets of laundry soap, facial tissues (individual packs), anti-bacterial wipes, disposable razors, Q-tips…

Clothing: cotton socks, t-shirts, warm scarves/knit hats, gloves, coats, paints, new underwear…

Food: bottled water, fruit juice/Gatorade, food items - healthy and individually wrapped, cheese & crackers, tuna kits, beef jerky, pull-top canned fruit or vegetables, fruit snacks, cookies, Spam…

Shelter: Tent, Ground cloth/tarp, Extra stakes, Shade tarp/poles/rope/stakes, Axe or hammer, Mat for tent entrance, Dust pan/brush

Bedding: Sleeping bag, Sheets/blankets, Pillow, Air mattress/sleeping pad/cot/tarp, Air pump, Repair kit for air mattress, Utility bags for storage

Cooking: Large water jug & water bucket, Coolers/ice
Thermos, Stove with fuel/propane, Matches/lighter, Charcoal/firewood/buddy burner, Dutch oven/tin can stove/box oven/etc, Campfire grill/BBQ grill, Fire starters/newspaper, Tablecloth/thumb tacks/clips, Plates & bowls/paper plates & bowls, Silverware/plastic silverware, Heavy-duty aluminum foil, Paper towels, Trash bags, Dish soap, Clothes pins, Cooking oil/Pam spray, Containers for food storage, Potholders/oven mitts, Pots and frying pans with lids, Soap for outside of pots and pans, Cook utensils-spatula, knife, spoon, Tongs, Skewers/grill forks, Can opener/bottle opener, Dutch oven, Mugs/paper cups, Ziplock bags, Napkins, Dish pan, Dish rags/towels, Scrub pad/brillo, Seasonings/sugar/condiments, Potato peeler

They tell us to talk about what this campaign will mean to us and how grateful we will be for the help. Well here is it. One day while out distributing food and other items one of the people I was helping picked up a rail road spike and handed it to me as her way of saying thank you. She had nothing, but this simple act has touched me so deeply. We can help people all over the world, we just want to help those here, in our area, the ones we can reach with our own hands, and the ones that have tried and fallen short.
