  • (1888PressRelease) January 07, 2016 - Nelson, New Zealand- Tawaho Management Services, a sustainable market development company, in collaboration with American based New Composite Partners, has recently announced the availability of a new exciting product to replace conventional materials used in the manufacturing of pallets, StrataPlast™!

    TODAY'S PALLET INDUSTRY
Experts say there are about 2 billion pallets in use every day. Pallets are used worldwide for the transportation of goods and they are primarily made of wood (approximately 97%). According to the Pallet and Container Research Laboratory at Virginia Tech University in 2004, 814 million pallets were manufactured or repaired with 800 million of those being wood pallets.

According to Wastebusters, Inc., about 4.7 billion feet of solid hardwoods were consumed for the production of wooden pallets starting back in 1992. Experts now estimate that the current annual production level of 600 million new wooden pallets requires the cutting of nearly one million acres of hardwood trees, trees that could take up to 40 years each to replace! During the past two decades both timber prices and landfill fees have increased and have compelled businesses to modify the way pallets are managed. Despite continual efforts to repair or recycle wooden pallets, a recent report declared that 6.16 million tons of wood pallets entered municipal solid waste landfills. Another report claims wooden pallets now represent 4% of all solid waste in landfills. Many landfills have stopped accepting pallets and others charge fees for recycling.

    THE STRATAPLAST™ SOLUTION
The extracted biomass serves as a raw material for biosynthesis. Once broken down into basic components, we can then produce the necessary monomers to be compounded into resin which then can create bioplastic pallets.

StrataPlast ™ pallets can be as durable and functional as traditional wood pallets, with the added advantage of lightening and strengthening the material, while still being environmentally friendly.

VARIETY OF ENVIRONMENTAL, HEALTH, AND SAFETY BENEFITS

The benefits of using StrataPlast™ pallets include:
    • Reduces the relative content of petrochemicals used in manufacturing: Conserves fossil fuels.
    • Promotes biobased renewable resources like waste wood to waste from commercial crop production.
    • Conserves timber: Half of all timber resources are harvested to manufacture new wooden pallets.
    • Reuses waste material therefore reducing demand for landfill space.
    • Conserves local ecology
    • Preserves and/or restores wildlife habitats
    • Helps fight climate change
    • Creates lighter and stronger pallets
