  • (1888PressRelease) December 05, 2013 - ElectraTherm, a leader in distributed power generation from waste heat, shipped a 10-unit order of Green Machines to Slovakia. The Green Machines will be deployed on a centralized district heating system in Slovakia as a means of increasing on-site efficiency and generating renewable energy.

Energy efficiency measures on district heating and cooling applications have become increasingly important in Europe where heating represents the largest energy end-use. According to the Euro Heat and Power Association, heating represents approximately 50% of total final energy consumption in Europe. Interest in efficiency measures on district heating systems that are technologically-dated and under increasing demand has led to Slovakia's innovative use of waste heat technology and interest from other European regions with similar challenges.

ElectraTherm's product, the Green Machine generates fuel-free, emission-free power from low temperature waste heat. On a district heating system, the Green Machine utilizes the excess heat available when the maximum load is not required, which may represent more than 80% of the year. Hot water enters the Green Machine at between 77-116°C (170-240°F), where it heats a working fluid into pressurized vapor, using Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) and proprietary technologies. As the low pressure vapor expands, it drives ElectraTherm's patented twin screw power block, which spins an electric generator and produces up to 65kWe.

ElectraTherm's Green Machine generates power from waste heat on applications such as internal combustion engines, biomass, geothermal/co-produced fluids and solar thermal. With more than 135,000 hours of run time, the Green Machine installed base leads the market in small-scale ORC technology.
