  • (1888PressRelease) August 03, 2010 - Delhi University, a name among India's finest University known globally, recently travelled another milestone in imparting global knowledge to its students. Delhi University and The National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM), signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly launch a Global Business Foundation Skills course. NASSCOM along with contributions from member BPO organisations like Genpact, Accenture, Convergys, Deloitte, Dell and IBM have designed the course for this program. Through this program, DU will help the students seeking employment in BPO industry. The university plans to introduce it as an add-on course for students pursuing Undergraduate programs in all colleges.

    Present scenario and need

Look like there could not have been a better time to launch such a program. Availability of skilled talent has been India's foremost attraction as a global sourcing country. India's graduate output has more than doubled in the past decade, with an additional 3.7 million students graduating in FY2010, a scale unmatched by any other country. However, currently only 25% of our engineering graduates and 10 to 15% of our other graduates are directly employable by the industry. It is this deficit between industry demand and educators supply which creates huge opportunity for this course and tremendous potential for students to become readily employable by the industry.

Global Business Foundation Skills: A step deeper

The Global Business Foundation Skills course will be available to all final year students across all streams. However this will be allotted on a first come first served basis due to limited capacity of pilot batches. This course plans to help students nurture basic foundation skills through following 5 modules:

    • Industry Awareness
    • Business Communication
    • Customer Management Skills
    • PC and data skills
    • Campus to corporate

To pursue this course, a student will first go through a NASSCOM Assessment of Competence (NAC) diagnostic test which will evaluate their current skill levels. On completion of curriculum and training, the student will take the final NAC test which will be the scorecard of his/her management and business pertaining skills and competencies.

The vice chancellor of DU, Deepak Pental called this a landmark event as for the first time the University and NASSCOM joined hands to address employability. Negotiations for other domain specific courses like Finance and Accounting are in the pipeline.

    NASSCOM says...

After the signing of the MoU, NASSCOM President, Som Mittal said, "IT companies are viewing the labour markets more through a global lens and have begun to realise that outsourcing decisions are not only being driven by cost-cutting but also by talent shortages. If India retains a share of around 50% of the global market through focused initiatives, the industry would still need an additional 6.9 million people. The skills acquired through this course will not only help students prepare themselves for the industry but also orient them towards lifelong learning."
