  • (1888PressRelease) April 17, 2012 - This month, Digital Surveys and eBIM opened their new online community, BIM Forum (http://www.bim.co.uk/) to public registration. The forum is a non-commercial venture with the aim of bringing together the professional community of Building Information Modellers, providing them with an open venue to discuss advances and techniques in the field of Building Information Modelling.

The forum is free to register and will provide members with a platform to discuss software and tools available for BIM projects, specialist data formats, share learning resources and give an opportunity to showcase portfolios and advertise recruitment opportunities. Digital Surveys and eBIM decided to launch the forum in the interests of mutually beneficial learning and for the growth the BIM industry.

"Building Information Modelling is an emerging and rapidly developing industry. We believe that it is vital that advances and developments in the industry are openly shared and discussed so that the community working with this technology can drive it forward in a consistent and positive direction. There's always a new workaround or process that can make BIM more efficient or automated, everybody working in BIM today has something to teach their peers" - Ben Bennett, eBIM

Building Information Modelling is a process which creates a detailed 3D model of a building which can then be used to create a virtual information model for shared use between architects, surveyors and engineers, contractors and the building owner. Each professional can add their discipline-specific knowledge to the model, reducing information loss and potential conflicts. This process often begins with a 3D scan of an existing building using Revit technology where reliable blueprints aren't available and can be applied to civil engineering projects, offshore oil platforms and industrial facilities as well as archaeological sites and historic restoration projects.

BIM has rapidly grown in importance over the past year, with increased adoption being encouraged by governments. In 2011 Paul Morell, UK Government Chief Construction advisor likened construction professionals who wouldn't adopt BIM to being "Betamaxed out", highlighting that it would be a crucial service in the near future. The government took the further steps of announcing that it would be a required aspect of tender on all its building projects by 2016.

"This really highlights the importance of our industry to pull together, share professional best-practices and promote the discipline to attract new blood to the field. We have a real opportunity at this point for the UK to become the vanguard for Building Information Modelling around the globe." - Ben Bennett, eBIM
