  • (1888PressRelease) June 05, 2010 - Datacraft has overhauled leading Korean conglomerate Bokwang's IT infrastructure with the implementation of a new state-of-the-art virtualization solution. By deploying Microsoft's Hyper-V server technology, Datacraft has consolidated and virtualized the servers. This has helped Bokwang achieve 40 percent reduction in the total cost of ownership and an overall improvement in network availability and manageability.

Since its inception in 1983, Bokwang has diversified its business to cover distribution, finance, service and manufacturing, as well as the set up of the Family Mart convenience store chain in 1989 and Phoenix Park in 1996. Its legacy IT infrastructure, which deployed Groupware, had a server utilisation of about 30 to 50 percent and was unable to cope with the rapid expansion of Bokwang's business. As a result, much of the IT resources and expenses were spent on resolving problems created by those idle servers.

"The situation was unsustainable," said Do-Geun Oh, IT Manager at Bokwang. "All these servers were running at half their expected usage, which not only resulted in low availability for our employees, but had also taken up a lot of our IT resources in troubleshooting the problems the servers had created. It was time we review the entire infrastructure in order to improve its network stability, staff productivity and cost efficiencies. Datacraft has considerable experience in the field of server implementation so we turned to them for help."

Datacraft conducted an in-depth investigation of the legacy Groupware system to determine Bokwang's operational requirements and recommend the appropriate solution. After a thorough analysis of the server and interviews with the operation managers, Datacraft identified the low server utilisation as a key concern and recommended the consolidation of the server resources using Microsoft's Hyper-V Server along with its Virtual Machine Manager and Operations Manager Virtualization assessment. A blueprint was developed to detail the migration of the legacy system onto the new virtual system, whilst maximising the server's remaining service life.

Once Bokwang agreed to the recommendation, Datacraft undertook the new infrastructure design and project management to ensure its successful implementation with minimal downtime. This was a critical requirement for Bokwang as it could not sustain any disruption in its daily operations.

"Virtualization makes complete sense for fast-paced growing organisations such as Bokwang," said Eric Choi, General Manager for Datacraft, Korea. "Virtualization optimises resources by reducing server sprawl, consolidating server management and improving application provisioning. Bokwang has already seen server provisioning reduce from three days to three hours. The system offers improved stability and easier manageability - all with a greener carbon footprint as less servers mean less energy consumption. With an estimated saving of 40 percent annually on the total cost of ownership and the initial investment recouped within a year, it also has a substantial impact on the bottom line."
