The selection recognizes Victor Torres' commitment to excellence in School Counseling, Teaching, Writing, and Public Speaking.
Victor Torres was born in Willits, went to college in Sacramento, lives in Elk Grove, and currently works for Stockton Unified School District. In 1987, he began his career as an outreach counselor working for La Familia Counseling Center in Sacramento, California. He worked with children struggling with high-risk behaviors such as alcohol and drug abuse, low academic achievement, negative peer associations, and disrespect of authority figures and parents. From there, he went to work for Capital Christian Center in Sacramento as a marriage, family and child counselor intern and as a school counselor. Shortly after, he began his career as a public school counselor at Fremont Middle School in Elk Grove, California.
Having just completed his twenty-third year as a school counselor and educator, Mr. Torres provides students with academic advising, peer counseling, conflict management, college/career counseling and individual counseling. He provides emotional support for students and families who have been ravaged by divorce, death, broken dating relationships and bullying, counseling for habitually truant children, and crisis intervention for traumatized children who have been abused, molested, or neglected.
"Many people cursed me as a child and told me that I would never amount to anything. I took those negative comments on as a personal challenge so I could prove my critics wrong," Mr. Torres said. "I have drawn from the gifts of perseverance, hard work, and forgiveness and have proven my critics wrong. I've become a world-renowned arm wrestling champion, a nationally-acclaimed professional counselor, public speaker and published author. I draw strength from my Christian faith for all areas of my life, which I believe is the key to my success, emotional well-being and peace of mind."
In addition to counseling, Mr. Torres now does public speaking to help people experience emotional freedom. He has written his first book, Armed For Battle and Destined for Glory, which is available on Amazon.com , Createspace.com, Barnes and Noble bookstores and the Bible House Bookstore in Elk Grove, California. Victor plans to continue writing in the future. Armed For Battle was a finalist for Best Christian E-Book of the Year and Best Autobiography in 2012 through the Global E-Book Awards. Victor's book focuses on assisting children and adults who suffer from damaged emotions with life-changing principles that help them to secure their emotional healing.
Mr. Torres has been recognized by seven different Who's Who organizations since 1988 and has received twelve professional awards in his career. He is also a 26-Time World Arm Wrestling Champion in four weight classes right and left-handed and has won world titles in northern and southern California as well as Boomtown, Nevada. He is a 10-Time United States National and a 27-Time California State Arm Wrestling Champion. He is also the winner of 128 career arm wrestling titles. Victor uses arm wrestling in his writing and speeches to illustrate how people can prevail against overwhelming trials, use tragedy as a steppingstone to their future, and develop an identity that embraces a champion's mindset.
