Vernon Board of Education, has been selected as a Professional Member of the Covington Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Susan Marie D. Stanton's commitment to excellence in Social Work and Education.

    Stanton, who holds a BSW from Stony Brook University, a MSW from Adelphi University, and a Master's Degree in Education from the College of Rochelle, is a licensed school social worker and master social worker, and is certified in rape crisis intervention and post graduate family therapy. She has been working in social work at two elementary schools within the district since 1991.

    As a school social worker, Stanton does individual and group counseling for students to help them with social skills and to help them understand the importance of cooperating with their teachers. She assists students in co-teaching classes learn these skills, does social history background reports, selects goals for students with individual education plans, meets with parents, and is also a part of the Positive Behavior Intervention Team. This team, which consists of many specialists, a special education teacher, and the school principal, develops a mission and a strategy to help the teachers catch their students behaving correctly and reward them accordingly. Just this year, Stanton joined the response to intervention team to assist in finding strategies to address a student's academic or social emotional skills.

    "As a person who has had many physical challenges since birth and has had to compensate," Stanton said, "I felt I could be more empathetic toward the student who is bullied because he or she learns differently.

    Hoping to remain in position until retirement, Stanton plans to either do some consulting work or perhaps write inspirational children's stories.

    Stanton is a member of National Association of Social Workers, School Social Workers Association, Mt. Vernon Federations of Teachers, and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and is the founder and past director for The Housing Options Program.
