  • Flint, MI (1888PressRelease) September 22, 2014 - Roselyn A. Nekervis, English as a Second Language (ESL) Educator at Midland Public Schools, Bullock Creek Schools, and Coleman Community Schools, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Covington Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry.

Roselyn A. Nekervis began working for Midland Public Schools as a noon hour supervisor in 1983. In the spring of that following year, her father's band announced that they needed an ESL teacher and he signed her up. Her very first student was Japanese. She's been teaching ESL since 1985.

In 2003, Ms. Nekervis began to also work at Bullock Creek Schools and in 2013 at Coleman Community schools. She also worked with Dow Chemical, Dow Corning, and Cendant Mobility over the past 30-plus years teaching ESL.

Working with foreign students individually and getting them to learn English at or above their grade level is Ms. Nekervis' main responsibility within the schools. She works with teachers and plans lessons alongside other teachers, gives standardized tests to see how much help the students need with their English, all the while monitoring how much they've progressed. The standardized tests cover listening, reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension.

"I always wanted to be a teacher. I feel that God led me to English as a Second Language. I love learning about the different cultures and developing relationships with my students that last a lifetime," Ms. Nekervis said about her three decades in teaching.

Ms. Nekervis plans to continue teaching within the walls of the classroom for a few more years, while standing by her philosophy that through love and understanding, all children can learn to read, you just have to start with the English they have and build on it. Ms. Nekervis was previously certified to teach grades K-8 in English, Science, and Social Studies in the state of Michigan. She holds an AB in Business from Great Lakes Jr. College, an AA in Applied Social Services Technician from Ferris State University, an AA in Executive Secretarial Science from Northwood University, a BA in Elementary Education from Saginaw Valley State University, and an MA in Teaching, also from Saginaw Valley State University. She serves as an administrative board member for First United Methodist Church and is a volunteer usher for Midland Center for the Arts. Ms. Nekervis also received numerous awards and recognitions throughout her career, including a 2003 Diversity Award from Midland Public Schools.
