  • Chicago, IL (1888PressRelease) September 13, 2014 - Melissa Anne Grandt, Educator at Big Hollow Middle School, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Covington Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry.

    Melissa Anne Grandt first began her career in January of 2000 as a paraprofessional at Copeland Manor School in Libertyville, Illinois. Obtaining her first teaching job that following August, she taught seventh grade special education resources classes at Nippersink Middle School in Richmond, Illinois. From there she taught inclusion and resource special education students from kindergarten through the second grade at Emmons Grade School.

    Having recently completed her eight year at Big Hollow Middle School, Ms. Grandt now has 14 years of experience behind her teaching special education students. During the 2014 academic school year, she served as the case manager of approximately 11 fifth grade students where she wrote Individual Education Plans, or IEPs, for students that suffered from autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, specific learning disabilities, and social/emotional disabilities. She also co-taught one reading, language arts, math, and social studies inclusion classes, trained a paraprofessional to use Read Naturally with students, implemented behavior prevention, behavior modification, and behavior intervention strategies, piloted a new reading decoding program called 'Word Warm Ups', and wrote and submitted a grant to the Illinois Reading Council.

    "Both of my parents were educators," Ms. Grandt said. "Throughout my teaching career I have always asked for their advice and feedback. I have also been extremely lucky to have worked with knowledgeable, dedicated, and hardworking teachers."

    Constantly inspired with a need to provide special education students with hope and make every aspect of their lives better for them, Ms. Grandt inspired by not only teaching, but working with other teachers and advocating to make students' experiences a positive one. Ms. Grandt hopes to soon be able to become a reading specialist so that she can improve upon students' reading abilities and would also love to work on her own professional development by going back to school to become a special education coordinator/director or get her English Language Endorsement to teach ELL students.

    Ms. Grandt holds a BA in Special Education from Illinois State University, an MSEd in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia University, and an MSEd in Science of Education from Northern Illinois University. She is also a certified advanced reading specialist. She is an active member of IRA, IRC, and Phi Beta Kappa, and is an advocate for Children International.
