  • Colorado Springs, CO (1888PressRelease) February 08, 2013 - Daryl Counsell, Orchestra Specialist at El Paso County School District 11, has been selected as a Professional of the Year Member of the Covington Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Daryl Counsell's commitment to excellence in Music and Education.

Daryl Counsell began teaching in 1983 for the Moscow School District #281 in Moscow, Idaho. His primary duties in this position were to teach fourth, fifth, and sixth grade beginning string students.

Now teaching fourth and fifth graders, Counsell concentrates on note reading and basic technique. He also has a studio where he teaches private lessons in violin, viola, and piano. In his thirty years of teaching, he has mentored young teachers and has worked with three teacher candidates as they completed their student teaching.

Counsell also works outside the classroom for the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony teaching the Little Mozart class, designed for beginners. He also conducts the Wolfgang Orchestra, which is the beginning level of string orchestra offered by this organization. He is an active member with the Colorado American String Teachers Association where he is currently running for the treasurer position.

Inspired by his mom who taught elementary school aged children for twenty years, Counsell also credits his high school choir teacher Don Goddard.

"There is joy in music, and through music we can share emotions and experiences in ways that no other discipline allows," Counsell explained.

Counsell earned an Inclusive Teacher Award from his current school for the 2011-12 academic school year, presented to teachers who demonstrate teaching methods and strategies that allow students with disabilities to participate and be successful in their classrooms. He was also selected by the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony board of directors as Outstanding Public School Teacher in 2012.
