Mitchell, Special Education Teacher at Mesquite Independent School District, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Covington Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Connie K. Mitchell's commitment to excellence in Education.

    Mitchell, who holds a BA in Information Science from California State University, and an MS in History from Texas A&M University, is currently pursuing a second master's degree in information science at the University of North Texas. She is expected to graduate in December of this year.

    Beginning her teaching career in 1968 instructing American History for two years, Mitchell worked on her master's degree simultaneously before taking on a new position at Garland Independent School District teaching American History and then special education. From there, she worked five more years before retiring and running a home day care. After six years with running the day care, she returned decided to teach again. She taught at Agnew Middle School for another thirty years before retiring in 2011. She has since become a certified librarian in 2008. During her time teaching special education students, Mitchell taught resource English and mathematics, in self-contained classrooms, and as a self-contained teacher of multi-handicapped children, which included those with physical disabilities, autism, and various other handicaps.

    "I always wanted to make a difference in this world while I traveled through it," Mitchell said about her career in education. "I have the gift of patience and am well suited to work with children that others may not want to."

    Mitchell is a member of Retired Teachers of Mesquite, Texas Library Association, and Daughters of the American Revolution. She current serves as an officer for the Beta Zeta chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa and is vice-president of the Colonial Cole Diggers chapter of Colonial Dames XVII Century.. She has traveled extensively to help school libraries become automated, including the International School in Tirana, Albania and the Anglo-American School in Moscow, Russia. She has volunteered with various organizations like the Special Olympics, Operation Care for the Homeless, and the NFL Experience. She's earned numerous awards, including being elected a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society at UNT, being named Employee of the Month at Agnew, has earned a Ben Shilcutt Award from ATPE, and the ADK District II Vera Neel Scholarship.
