Cosmetic Microbead Ban Enforced in Thailand

Thailand introduces ban on the importation, production or sale of microbeads in cosmetic products. End Quote

(1888PressRelease) February 14, 2020 - The Kingdom of Thailand officially enforced a ban on the use of plastic microbeads in cosmetic products on January 1, 2020.

The ban, announced by the Ministry of Public Health on December 24, 2019, applies to the importation, production and sale of cosmetic products. Products that are already placed onto the market can be sold until June 28, 2020. After this date, the ban will also apply to them.

Microbeads are a common addition to rinse-off products, such as facial scrubs. They are washed down the drain and, because they are small, they can easily slip through water treatment systems, thereby ending up in the sea. Made from plastic, they do not degrade in water or the environment and, once they are in the environment, they quickly enter the food chain and water ecosystems.

Manufacturers who use microbeads are advised to now replace them with substitutes made from natural ingredients.
