  • (1888PressRelease) September 07, 2011 - Prime Principle (www.classroommonitor.co.uk) is launching a new self-assessment feature for Classroom Monitor Secondary, helping pupils to take ownership of their learning while also reducing teacher workload. Complying with the Government's Assessment for Learning strategy, the self-assessment feature will encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own learning, while streamlining teaching processes, providing teachers with the resources to easily monitor and report on the progress of pupils.

Currently used by over 15,000 teachers across 1,500 schools, Classroom Monitor hosts and manages data for approximately 250,000 students across the UK and internationally. The online markbook facility is used to record and monitor students' progress in order to assess and track their development, providing teachers with an outlet to offer feedback as well as detailed assessment information which can be used to gauge the process of a single student or a whole class.

The addition of the new self-assessment feature allows pupils to safely log on to their Classroom Monitor profile to see a markbook displaying the criteria from each subject on which they will be assessed, as well as their current targets, levels and grades. As students' complete pieces of work or assessment, these can be attached to their record in Classroom Monitor. Once a piece of work has been completed, pupils can check which objectives they believe they have met and this goes to the teacher for moderation and feedback.

This new feature puts the assessment onus on the pupil and encourages them to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses, enabling them to take responsibility for their own learning - a requirement of the Assessment for Learning strategy. As a result, students are no longer restricted to traditional means of assessment set for them by the teacher on a day-to-day basis and are given the freedom to take control of their own learning. The classic features of Classroom Monitor enable students to track their progress, analyse feedback and identify areas that they need to work on.

As well as being hugely beneficial to students, the self-assessment feature also streamlines the marking process for teachers, freeing them from the burden of paper assessments and the need to record results in numerous locations. The single location of data in the online markbook allows teachers to see details of pupil progression, outstanding assessments and the information of each class at a glance, providing a quick and easy method of gathering group data, or identifying material to be used for individual reports.

Chris Scarth, Commercial Director at Prime Principle, comments: "We are extremely excited about the introduction of the self-assessment feature to the Classroom Monitor software. The addition of this software extends learning opportunities and allows students to identify their strengths and weaknesses, highlighting areas that may require extra work or attention. This enables students to take responsibility for their own progress and improve their learning experience.

"As well as being beneficial to students, teachers are also relieved from the burdens of traditional marking, enabling them to focus their attention on what is important - students and their development."
