  • (1888PressRelease) February 16, 2011 - Sharjah - Citibank volunteers in the UAE joined more than 45,000 Citi volunteers in 75 countries for the company's fifth annual "Global Community Day" on October 23rd. More than 200 volunteers from Citibank, including employees and their families and friends, spent quality time at the Sharjah Desert Park with 100 orphaned children, who are being looked after by the Red Crescent.

Citi employees are committed to being a global force for good in their communities. Many Citi employees volunteer year-round, but Global Community Day provides an annual opportunity to have company employees, along with their families and friends, come together as a global volunteer team. Local volunteer groups will be working in North America, Asia Pacific, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa on a variety of projects addressing specific community needs including literacy, housing, environmental protection, nutrition, health care and disaster relief.

"Thanks to the tens of thousands of Citi employees that participate each year, Citi's Global Community Day has become a company tradition," said Pam Flaherty, President and Chief Executive Officer, Citi Foundation and Director, Corporate Citizenship. "Whether it's building a local community farm or teaching basic financial skills to disadvantaged families, Citi employees will be working collectively to strengthen the communities where we do business, a key component of our commitment to responsible finance."

The day out with the children group was full of adventure and happy moments. Citi employees and friends toured the Park's Natural History Museum, Arabian Wildlife Centre, and Children's Farm together with the hosted children.

Following a great tour, the group enjoyed lunch at the Park, and school bags (provided by Hamleys) were then distributed to children by Atiq Ur-Rehman, Citi's Chief Executive Officer for the Middle East Division, who in turn received a trophy from the UAE Red Crescent, presented by Red Crescent's Sharjah Manager, Mr. XXXXXX, as a token of appreciation.

"The Global Community Day is one way to demonstrate our resolve to fulfill our duty as a responsible corporate citizen in the UAE and elsewhere in the region. We are committed to be an integral part of the Middle Eastern societies where we've maintained a presence for more than half-a-century, and we intend on being socially active and serving the community on an ongoing basis," commented Mr. Ur-Rehman.
