Children's Furniture Standards FIRA/FRQG C001~C004 Updated

  • (1888PressRelease) March 10, 2017 - The Furniture Retail Quality Group (FRQG) has worked with the Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) to revise four of its standards for children's furniture.

    The four updated standards are:
    • FIRA/FRQG C001:2016 - General Safety Requirements
    • FIRA/FRQG C002:2016 - Seating: Requirements for strength, stability and durability
    • FIRA/FRQG C003:2016 - Tables and desks: Requirements for strength, stability and durability
    • FIRA/FRQG C004:2016 - Storage furniture - Requirements for strength, stability and durability

    The older versions of these standards, dated to 2008, were withdrawn when the new versions were published and became effective on January 27, 2017.

    Each standard has been completely revised and updated. The main updates for each standard are:
    FIRA/FRQG C001:2016 - General Safety Requirements
    • Updated references to British and European Standards: BS EN 71-1, BS EN 71-2, BS EN 71-3, BS EN 14184-1
    • Additional requirements for organic chemical compounds based on BS EN 71-9
    • Anti-entrapment requirements for flaps and durability requirements for lid-support mechanism for flaps, based on EN 71-1
    • Addition of Annex offering guidance on chemicals in furniture

    FIRA/FRQG C002:2016 - Seating: Requirements for strength, stability and durability
    • Updates references to British and European Standards: BS EN 1728, BS EN 1729-2
    • Scope extended to include bean bags
    • Standard specifies that it does not cover children's beds, as BS 8509 covers these products

    FIRA/FRQG C003:2016 - Tables and desks: Requirements for strength, stability and durability
    • Updated references to BS EN 1730
    • Standard specifies that it does not cover children's beds, as BS 8509 covers these products
    • Change in the test method for stability for tables supporting parasols, from BS EN 581-3:6.2.2 to BS EN 1730:2012:7.4

    FIRA/FRQG C004: 2016 - Storage furniture - Requirements for strength, stability and durability
    • Updated references to British and European Standards: BS EN 14749, BS EN 747-1
    • Force in test item has been changed: wall attachment device: from 200N to 400N
    • A warning label for stability requirement has been added

    All of the revised standards have also had references to other FIRA/FRQG documents updated.

    The FRQG is a group made up of representatives from the major furniture retailers in the United Kingdom. The group specialises in producing standards and guidance documents covering areas of the furniture industry that are not fully covered by British or European standards.
