  • (1888PressRelease) October 17, 2011 - Vancouver, BC - Analyzing results from a recent study by the Fordham Institute, K5 Learning, , found some startling results: students who do not perform well above average in reading and math by grade 3 have very little chance of ever becoming an academic high achiever.

"The initial report, Do High Flyers Maintain their Altitude?, focused on how top students performed, but we were curious to find out about the rest of the kids ," comments Asa Zanatta, Chief Mom Officer, K5 Learning. "We analysed some additional data the Fordham Institute shared with us and we were astounded by the degree to which children's academic future is already defined by the time they are 8 years old. By grade 3, the writing is truly on the wall, and we feel that's something parents should be aware of."

In this massive study of over 170,000 students, children who were performing in the bottom 1/3 in reading or math in grade 3 had less than a 1% chance of ever becoming a high achiever. Average students in grade 3, (between 40 and 60 percentile) had less than a 5% chance of becoming high achievers later in high school.
