  • (1888PressRelease) September 23, 2011 - H.C. Starck and Clausthaler Umwelttechnik-Institut (Cutec) have joined forces to successfully develop a completely new generation of catalyzers and process technology for the production of substitute natural gas from biomass as a renewable energy source.

H.C. Starck and Cutec have engineered a range of catalyzers with an oxide base containing cobalt, molybdenum, and aluminum, which have been successfully tested under laboratory and pilot plant conditions. The catalyzers proved to be robust and reclaimable, even under the most unfavorable conditions, having achieved high yields with which the synthesis of substitute natural gas is possible.

The use of biomass to generate energy offers many advantages. For instance, the energy supply is not dependent on naturally occurring forces of nature, and can be used to generate heat and electricity. At the same time, it conserves increasingly scarce fossil fuels. When it comes to the gasification of biomass, there has been a lack of economically efficient materials and processes for gas production in the past.

H.C. Starck has been active in the field of environmentally friendly technologies for many years and develops innovative and sustainable products such as those for the conservation of natural resources. The successful research project was funded as part of the European research network ERA-NET Bioenergy. Research and funding partners were the Vienna University of Technology, the Güssing biomass power station, the Austrian company Repotec, the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, and the Agency for Renewable Resources - lead partner of the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection.
