  • (1888PressRelease) September 30, 2010 - Publishing
Having started modestly (only two original books in 2002), Casemate's proprietary publishing program in 2010 now features 32 yearly releases, with over 150 books currently in print. Having established a reputation for quality editorial and production values, the company has bucked the economic tide, has avoided shrinking risks, and has instead attracted a veritable "cream of the crop" of proven and talented new authors in the always-fascinating field of military history.

Casemate's strategy for publishing books has been constant throughout-that is, always to offer something new to the informed reader, whether hidden takes on unknown battles or fresh perspectives on the famous ones, so that readers can always look to increase their knowledge, either through the eyes of expert historians or those of firsthand participants. Casemate's staff, having considerable expertise of its own, disdains repetitive or well-worn topics, and instead brings true interest to the topics it undertakes. Combined with its very best efforts at promotion and publicity, Casemate has steadily earned respect among military history readers, writers, and other publishers worldwide.

A look at the Casemate list in any one season reveals new perspectives and new information on a broad variety of topics. In the past year, Exodus from the Alamo (a startling new account of that battle), American Guerrilla (which named the "true father" of Army Special Forces), Erich von Manstein (a revealing biography of the Third Reich's best general), and Axis Sally (the first non-fiction biography of the famous broadcaster), have proven to be publishing success stories. In addition, Casemate's "found" projects of previously unfound you-are-there memoirs, such as A Foot Soldier for Patton and Eastern Inferno, have added to the precise knowledge of combat in some of history's greatest campaigns.

    Distribution
In addition to publishing its own line of books, Casemate also distributes over 30 other military publishers from the US, the UK and beyond, including Savas Beatie (US), Pen and Sword Books (UK), Histoire and Collections (France), Helion & Co (UK), Andrea Press (Spain) and Lancer Publishers (India). Thanks to the excellent titles and special expertise of these and all its other distributed lines, Casemate's sales and distribution system has been able to gain prominence among major trade buyers, as well as with the direct history-reading public.

    Branching Out
In 2008 Casemate launched a line of non-military books called Athena, further expanding the range of distributed books to include subjects as diverse as cookery, heritage, travel and gardening. Success with the latter subject has led Casemate to publish its first non-military book under the imprint Newbury Books. The Sustainable Rose Garden, published in association with the Manhattan Rose Society, may be destined to become a classic, with contributions from many of the leading authorities in the field.

    Growth at Home and Overseas
Since its founding almost a decade ago, Casemate has expanded considerably in physical terms, not only with an editorial office in New York, but also
by establishing a UK co-office that guarantees the best possible overseas exposure for new titles, as well as contacts with new authors from the wealth of talent available in Britain and other countries.

Established in 2007, Casemate-UK has been highly successful in attracting new distribution clients, and is also very active in sub-rights and establishing new markets. Casemate-UK has already become the largest distributor of military books in Britain, and in 2011 will also begin originating and producing its own books.

New Ways of Selling Books - and Old
Today, eBooks have become a factor, and Casemate has embraced the digital revolution, now offering all its own and an increasing number of its clients' books as eBooks on the many platforms available, dealing directly with Apple's iBooks, Amazon's Kindle, B&N's Nook, Kobo, Sony and others. While eyeing this evolution carefully, in order to protect content, Casemate knows its readership can only expand, and is convinced that in a field such as history, the more one learns about it the more one wishes to explore it further and so making the content easy to find in the widest range of formats is a key to future growth.

As part of this strategy, in 2010 Casemate has invested in internet start up company Ebooq. Working through Ebooq, Casemate has begun to produce books as apps for many hardware platforms, including the Apple's iPad and iPhone and the plethora of new devices coming out using Google's Android operating system. Casemate believes there is a huge future for books as apps and is very excited to be at the cutting edge of this new technology.

At the same time as embracing new technologies Casemate is also building a major mail order program - The Warrior - a rather more traditional way of reaching customers and has also significantly raised its profile at a the leading consumer shows for military enthusiasts, in the US at The Military History Weekend, Historicon, IPMS National Convention, Cold Wars and in the UK at Salute, Euro Militaire and many others. Over the course of a year on both sides of the Atlantic Casemate attends almost 20 different shows, bringing authors and readers together and doing that most important thing - selling books!
Reflecting on its exceptional growth in the decade since its founding in 2001, Casemate takes pride in being both on the cutting edge of new technologies and keeping in close personal touch with its readership. Together with its dedicated staff, plus the increasing number of historians who by now look to Casemate for best expertise and publishing results, the company can indeed look back on its first decade with satisfaction, and also with high confidence to the next.
