CARTES in North America to be launched in Vegas in 2012
CARTES & IDentification, the global event for digital security and smart technology, has announced the launch of a new event - CARTES in North America, which will take place from 5 to 7 March 2012 in Las Vegas (USA). International companies involved in the payment, mobility and digital-security industries are invited to participate in CARTES in North America in order to discover new opportunities.
- (1888PressRelease) March 16, 2011 - CARTES in North America follows on from the international success and development of the existing CARTES events. The event has been designed for companies and other organisations in the smart-card, digital-security and smart-technologies sectors, the aim being to assist them in the development of their businesses in the large, dynamic North American market.
CARTES in North America will host an extensive programme of conferences, which will be led by an international panel of experts. These conferences will provide content on mobile financial services, card security and smart ID cards.
The US market is the largest market in the world for payment cards, with 576 million credit cards and 507 million debit cards in circulation (2009 figures). This represents a staggering 37.9 billion transactions.
The average US consumer has 2.7 cards, and the average number of credit cards per card holder is 3.5. These are some of the highest figures in the world. At the same time, annual fraud loss is rising and represents a total of $8.6 billion, or 0.8% of the total annual spend on cards.
The US payment-card industry is considering the implementation and development of EMV (Europay, Mastercard and VISA, which is a global standard for credit and debit payment cards based on chip-card technology) in order to improve payment security, and to offer enhanced services to cardholders. In 2010, Travelex launched a reloadable prepaid EMV debit card for US travellers coming to Europe.
Contactless payment cards are becoming increasingly popular for use in retail, transportation and on university campuses. Contactless smart-card-based fare collection systems are already being used or are being introduced in many cities across North America. About 21% of consumers already have a contactless debit card, while 26% have a contactless credit card.
The arrival of Near Field Communications (NFC) telephones looks set to accelerate the development of mobile payments in 2011. At present, while mobile phones are an integral part of US daily life, their primary use is P2P communication.
E-government and security applications are also booming, with the usage of the Federal Personal Identity Verification Card (PIV) for logical and physical security, and the electronic health record (EHR) exchange.
CARTES in North America is set to be a key event in the smart-card industry calendar. The trade-show will constitute a unique forum for the industry in the USA and neighbouring countries, enabling participants to network and share innovations.
