  • Salinas, CA (1888PressRelease) May 07, 2014 - A team of inner-city students from Kansas City, Mo., will explore the beauty and innovation of California's coastline during a dynamic tour from the redwood forests near Eureka to the white-sand beach of Carmel-by-the-Sea. MINDDRIVE will drive an all-electric Karmann Ghia from Eureka, Calif., heading south on Highway 1 en route to Carmel in June, 2014. Carmel-by-the-Sea is designated as the official site for the finale celebration on Wednesday, June 4.

It's all part of an innovative, nonprofit, after-school STEM ( Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education program called MINDDRIVE, where mentors teach at-risk high school students critical thinking, creativity and entrepreneurship through restoring damaged exotic automobiles, then rebuilding them into alternative-energy vehicles. This year's group of students and mentors re-built four Karmann Ghia's into a fully functioning electric vehicles, and will showcase two of their cars to spread their innovation-in-education message throughout their trek.

The purpose of the MINDDRIVE Tour is to showcase how innovative education programs that connect students with mentors and technology with art can inspire the next generation.

Part of their tour includes meeting with technology industry experts from Tesla and Stanford University's REVs program. The students will arrive in picturesque Carmel on Wednesday, June 4. The city plans a free welcoming celebration, and the public is invited to hear the students' stories behind their trip and see (or view) the newly designed Karmann Ghia. A group of automotive enthusiasts and city leaders will greet the MINDDRIVE students.

From 4-6 p.m. at the Sunset Center parking lot at Eighth and San Carlos streets, there will be a free showcase of MINDDRIVE's Karmann Ghia, along with an eclectic collection of innovative vehicles from the past and present including: Tesla's original electric vehicle prototype the T Zero along with the Tesla S and Tesla Roadster, all-electric Zero Motorcycles, Chevy Volt, THINK EV, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Porsche, Studebaker, Riley and Panhard among others. Using the theme "Technology + Art = Innovation," the display of cars will reveal how innovation drives the future.

In addition, Light+Shadow Fine Art in Carmel will host a MINDRIVE VIP event from 5-7 p.m. that evening at its gallery on Sixth Street between Dolores and Lincoln, featuring artwork by Thierry Thompson, widely known around the world for his incredible airbrush paintings of exotic cars.

The tour and the celebration in Carmel are designed to shine a spotlight on MINDDRIVE, where students learn through classroom sessions and through real world, hands-on projects, utilizing leading edge technology, innovation, science and communication, particularly directed toward sound environmental results.

High school seniors in the program have achieved a 100 percent graduation rate with 80 percent of them attending college. The mission is "to inspire the students to engage in their education, expand their vision of the future so they can provide and enjoy a sustainable life." Find out more at www.minddrive.org.
