  • San Diego, CA (1888PressRelease) August 04, 2012 - Vista, CA - Babies in Bloom is expecting over 90 Mothers and their babies to attend this year's "Big Latch On" synchronized breastfeeding event. The breastfeeding event is all part of World Breastfeeding Week.

To raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding and the need for global support, the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action organized World Breastfeeding Week. World Breastfeeding Week, August 1-7, is celebrated in 120 countries.

This year's theme is "The Road to Lifelong Health Begins with Breastfeeding." This road to lifelong health is not one for mothers and babies to travel alone. "While breastfeeding is a learned behavior, it is important to remember that the journey to successful breastfeeding begins with support of families, health care providers, governments, employers and communities," said Cathy Carothers, President of the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA).

To celebrate this community and world support for the 10th anniversary of World Breastfeeding Week, Babies in Bloom will participate in "The Big Latch On." Every year during World Breastfeeding Week thousands of breastfeeding women and their babies/children across the world will gather in their own communities to take part in the Big Latch On, a synchronized breastfeeding event in multiple locations. The first Big Latch On took place in Aotearoa New Zealand in 2005 and has now taken off globally. It was introduced to Portland, Oregon in 2010 by Joanne Edwards and in 2011, 5687 women participated in the Global Big Latch On.

Local Latch On host, Babies in Bloom, strives for community support of new and nursing mothers. They believe it is not only important to teach breastfeeding but to continue the support throughout the baby's life. Rochelle McLean, lactation consultant and owner of Babies in Bloom stated, "We are excited to host this event! It is important to normalize breastfeeding in our communities and support mothers along their journeys. One of the most common reasons that women are unsuccessful with breastfeeding is lack of support. Babies in Bloom works every day to educate and support mothers. The Big Latch On is an event to celebrate them. More than 90 mothers and their babies are expected to attend. Please join us as we are aiming to once again break the record."
