  • Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill, NC-SC (1888PressRelease) February 18, 2012 - Solomon Lee Willis, College Instructor for Cleveland Community College, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Solomon Lee Willis's commitment to excellence in Mathematics and Higher Education.

Willis, who holds a BS in Mathematics from Gardner-Webb University and an MA in Mathematics from Appalachian State University, began teaching immediately after earning his bachelor's degree in 1999. In 2002, he began teaching at the college level in mathematics.

Having teaching experience in introductory algebra, intermediate algebra, accelerated algebra, survey of mathematics, college algebra, college trigonometry, brief calculus, calculus II, statistics and mathematical models, Willis also has experience in both day and evening on and off campus teachings. He has also taught online developmental and college transfer mathematics.

Willis' master's degree program, which was largely focused on using technology, specifically Texas Instruments graphing calculators, within the classroom, is used every day as a source of both engaging his students and making the learning experience more fun. He also uses online homework management systems in all of his courses, which enables students to get help and feedback on their work immediately with just the click of a button.

"I have always enjoyed helping others," Willis said. "Teaching allows me to do that. As a first generation college graduate I knew that I would need a college education in order to succeed in today's world."

With plans of eventually returning to graduate school to pursue his doctorate degree in education, Willis hopes to continue teaching math at his local college.
Willis is a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and is also a board member for the North Carolina Association of Advanced Placement Mathematics Teachers. He has spoken at various NCTM, Texas Instruments and Cengage Learning conferences, which guides teachers on how to use technology in their classrooms. In 2009 and 2011, Willis was nominated for the Excellence in Teaching Award at Cleveland Community College. When he isn't busy working, he enjoys the performing arts, music and collecting Disney memorabilia.
