  • Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL (1888PressRelease) July 20, 2010 - Matthew A. Brown, Senior Fire Investigator of Crash and Fire Investigative Services Group (CFIS) and Lieutenant for the Lakeland Fire Department, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Matthew A. Brown's commitment to excellence in the Fire and Rescue.

Brown, who holds a Bachelor's of Business Administration from Florida Southern College, has been working in the field since 1998, when he decided to get out of the banking industry and make the switch in becoming a full-time firefighter.

Starting out with the Polk County Fire Department, Brown remained there for a year before switching to the City of Lakeland Fire Department in 1999. Within six years, he was promoted to Fire Lieutenant in 2005, where he is still employed. Currently responsible for the operations and safety of his assigned personnel at emergency scenes, ranging from house fires, hazardous material incidents, high angle rescue, and motor vehicle collisions with entrapment, he also ensures the accuracy of fire and medical reports and complete pre-incident plans. He coordinates the Lakeland Police Department's Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) Medic Program, which is one of his most noteworthy accomplishments. "This program took over four years to become implemented and was a joint venture between several different city departments," Brown explained. "This program not only benefits SWAT, but it also benefits the citizens in receiving prompt medical care in a hostile environment."

After following in the footsteps of his father, who worked in banking for over thirty-five years, Brown decided later in life that he needed to make a change. "My heart needed more, so I made a career move and became a firefighter and paramedic. The support of my wife and family inspired me then and they continue to every day," he explained. Hoping to soon advance to fire chief for the department, he knows that he must have a vast array of experience and education, which is why he studied to be a paramedic, as well becoming a member of the Urban Search and Rescue (USAR), and studying tactical paramedics. He also works as a private fire investigator for CFIS Group.

Currently, Brown is a certified Fire Instructor III through the state of Florida. He's also a certified Fire Inspector II through the state of Florida and a licensed paramedic. He is a member of Rotary International and is a committee member for the National Fire Protection Association 1021, of which he is the first firefighter in the City of Lakeland to be selected to serve on the committee. He's also on the NFPA 1021 Committee, which determines the qualification for fire officers. Matthew volunteers his time coaching the local JV and Varsity Girls Soccer at St. Paul's Lutheran School. He is a strong supporter of the First United Methodist Church, his local Rotary Committee, and St. Paul's Lutheran School.
