  • Memphis, TN-AR-MS (1888PressRelease) November 04, 2010 - Marilyn Whitney, Registered Nurse at Methodist Hospital South, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry.

Whitney, who holds a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences, has been working in her field since volunteering as a candy striper during the summer months of tenth grade. Since then, she knew that a career in a hospital setting was exactly what she wanted to do in the future.

As a registered nurse, Whitney attends high and low risk deliveries, is in charge of wellborn and NICU baby care. She also transports and stabilizes infants that require specific types of care, typically referred to as level two and level three patients. She is very knowledgeable in IV and PICC therapy, intubation and mechanical ventilation, and the ability to communicate with her patients both verbally and nonverbally. "As long as I can remember I loved nursing. Helping others always gave me a great joy," Whitney said. "The babies, with their pure, sweet spirits were always the greatest inspirations for me."

Hoping to obtain her certification in neonatal nursing soon, Whitney also wants to participate in programs to promote good prenatal care, health, and awareness. Another target area of interest for her is prevention of infant morbidity and mortality. Currently, she is a member of the National Association of Neonatal Nurses and the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses, and is a board member of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women. She's been named Nursing Star for Tennessee three times and was named to the Top Ten Nurses of Tennessee three times as well. She was awarded the Miracle in Motion Award two times, once from Methodist University and once from Methodist South. In Marilyn's free time, she volunteers as a Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church Greeter and for the National Civil Rights Museum, and also enjoys dancing, photography, and attending local cultural events.
