  • Jackson, MS (1888PressRelease) February 14, 2012 - LaWanda Shelton Herron, Assistant Director of Nursing at Holmes Community College, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes LaWanda Shelton Herron's commitment to excellence in Healthcare and Higher Education.

    Herron, who holds a BSN from Delta State University, a MSN in Healthcare Administration from Central Michigan University, a second MSN as a Nurse Practitioner from Delta State University, and a PhD in Educational Leadership from the University of Mississippi, has been a registered nurse for the past twenty years and a family nurse practitioner for fourteen years.

    Having spent six years as a nurse corps officer in the US Navy, Herron managed approximately 15-20 nurses and fifteen corpsmen. During her time served, she played the roles assistant nurse manager, became a BLS, NALS and PALS instructor, and was promoted to charge nurse before being discharged.

    Now serving as the assistant director of nursing at Holmes Community College, Herron is responsible for managing the day to day activities for both faculty and students at the Grenada Center. She assists with the continued evaluation of the curriculum, participates in research and grant writing and presents at nursing workshops at the local, state, regional, national and international levels. She has taught at the associates, bachelors and masters levels.

    "Through the nurse educator role I have had the opportunity to share my advanced knowledge with students of all ages, cultures and ethnic groups," Herron said about her career. "My quest for knowledge has inspired me to continue to push myself to be the best that I can be."

    With a goal of heightening student participation and creative thinking, Herron believes that her excitement and knowledge in the field is an essential tool in transporting the necessary information to her students. She also hopes to serve as the regional director at her college's associate degree nursing program and become more involved in research and publication endeavors.

    Herron is a member of Sigma Theta Tau Honor Nursing Sorority, American Nurses Association, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Eliza Pilars Nursing Organization, Mississippi Nurses Association, National League for Nursing and National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculty. She was nominated for the Nightingale Nurse of the Year in 2010, received the University of Mississippi Higher Education Doctoral Award in 2007, received a DSU Class Mentor Award in 1997 and a MASN Hall of Fame Award in 2005. When Herron isn't busy working, she enjoys walking, reading and playing softball in her free time.
