  • Billings, MT (1888PressRelease) November 15, 2011 - Joyce A. Vera, Program Coordinator at Raising Our Community Kids Safely (ROCKS), has been selected as an Honored Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Joyce A. Vera's commitment to excellence in Non-Profit and Youth Development.

Vera began her career teaching elementary music at her local catholic school after studying performance arts at Rocky Mountain College. She was then hired at the high school level as a full-time accompanist for the choral department at Custer County District High School where she continues today.

As the principle accompanist for the choral department, Vera assisted in rehearsing the six choirs in a seven day period, along with directing one of the numerous ensembles. There are about two hundred students in the choral department, which is about one-third of the student population. During the day she warms up all choirs, work sections, and assists the director whenever she can. She also travels with the audition choirs for festivals, tours and competitions.

Vera is also the coordinator and founder of ROCKS program. It is a non-profit enrichment program that serves elementary aged children in the crucial hours after school. ROCKS also has an eight week summer recreation program. The program, which was founded in 2001, is a state licensed facility that partners with many entities in the city, along with the Nutrition Coalition that deals with a federally funded program that provides free hot lunches during the summer for the community.

"The best way to predict the future is to invent it," Vera said about her ongoing efforts to make a difference in the eyes of a child. "My first and primary goal has always been to set an example for my daughter, young girls and young women, as someone who can overcome odds to be a success."

In addition to teaching and overseeing her non-profit organization, Vera also teaches private voice lessons and is the choir director and organist at her local church where she is also a member. She is a member of the Nutrition Coalition and a past member of the Montana Childcare Resource and Referral Task Force.

The choirs and ensembles continue to receive superior ratings at contests and festivals that they perform at on an annual basis. Vera was part of an award given to the choir director, herself and the top choir from the local Chamber of Commerce and was honored to be asked to accompany the All Northwest Choir and the Montana All-State Choir. The ROCKS program has received numerous awards and recognitions, including one for Outstanding Innovative Programs in the Nation through the College and Planning and Management Board, and was published in their national magazine. They were also recognized by the Governor as one of the top three programs in the state of Montana at the Governors Summit. ROCKS has also be recognized by the Afterschool Alliance in their national publication and on their national website. They were also chosen as one of the Afterschool Programs to be a Pilot Program for the "Re-Charge" campaign across the nation, sponsored by Action for Healthy Kids and the National Football League. When Joyce isn't busy working or volunteering, she enjoys spending time with her daughter, cooking, baking and being at home.
