The selection recognizes Bharathi Hattiangady's commitment to excellence in Neuroscience Research.

Dr. Hattiangady, who received her PhD in Neuroscience from Manipal University in 2003, began her research career in May of 2003 after being awarded a postdoctoral research fellowship with Duke University Medical Center.

As a research scientist for the prestigious university, Dr. Hattiangady has worked on multiple projects funded by the National Institutes of Health and Department of Veteran Affairs. A daily routine typically involves developing and analyzing animal models of epilepsy, culturing and expansion of neural stem cells, rodent stereotaxic neurosurgery and learning and conducing memory analysis and neural stem cell transplantation in chronically epileptic animals, just to name a few. She is an expert in stereological cell counting, analysis of adult neurogenesis in normal and disease conditions, neuron tracing, EEG recordings, collection, analysis and interpretation of data, preparing manuscripts for publications, developing and maintaining animal protocols for experiments and general lab management. "I have a lot of self-motivation and a true thirst for knowledge," Dr. Hattiangady said about her work, recognizing that her true interest in science, hard work and perseverance in achieving scientific goals also play a major role in the research field.

Hoping to get extramural funding for her research through grant proposals and establishing herself as an independent Principal Investigator, Dr. Hattiangady's goal is to apply and succeed in getting extramural funding to her own research collaborations. "My hope is to make specific neural cells that are lost in various neurodegenerative diseases from expanded stem cells and use them to treat epilepsy and other neurodegenerative disorders afflicting mankind, she said."

In addition to receiving national and international acclaim for her publications and presentations in numerous scientific magazines, Dr. Hattiangady has also received the Five-Year Service Award from the Duke University in 2008, a Travel Award for Best Scientific Abstract in the 14th Annual Conference of American Society for Neural Therapy and Repair in 2007, as well as a research fellowship at Manipal University in India in 1997 and national merit scholarship from the government of India throughout her undergraduate studies.
