  • (1888PressRelease) March 06, 2012 - Back in January it won the Primary Digital Category at the BETT Awards 2012 and now it has been shortlisted for the Best Primary Resource or Equipment - involving ICT Category at the Education Resources Awards!

Oddizzi features characters Odd and Izzi who take children on a fascinating virtual tour of the world and help them discover and understand the world, physically and culturally. It was created by former primary teacher Jenny Cooke who was frustrated by the lack of suitable resources for young children: "Pupils would often come with information downloaded from Wikipedia which they didn't really understand and which was far too difficult for them to process and even I couldn't easily find anything better! Now, with Oddizzi, teachers have a resource to use in the classroom or to offer children for independent study that is age appropriate and conveys just how truly amazing and diverse our world is."

The Education Resource Awards (ERA) are highly regarded by the education community and are judged by a totally independent panel of teaching and learning professionals. They celebrate the innovative approach to learning and teaching by teachers, institutions and organisations from all levels of education. Ray Barker, director of BESA, said: "Now in their fourteenth successful year, what makes these awards really different is that they focus on the resources, services and people that really make a practical impact on learning and the day-to-day work of the teachers in the classroom. At a time when schools are being given more freedom to use their professional judgement to organise learning as they see fit, the awards play an increasingly important role in helping to identify products that make a real difference to education."

Commenting on her company's success, Jenny Cooke, founder of Oddizzi, said: "We are thrilled that we have been shortlisted for this award. Oddizzi's content has been written by teachers and travel writers so it is up to date and totally relevant to young readers. The site features live newsfeeds, games and a tool that enables pupils to communicate with classrooms around the world. These days it is so important that children should have the chance to explore global issues and be part of a global society. We are so pleased that the judges have recognised this."
