  • Chicago, IL (1888PressRelease) October 30, 2010 - Timberline Knolls and La Ventana San Francisco will co-host a luncheon November 12, 2010, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel, benefitting Eating Disorder Recovery Support (EDRS), a non-profit group dedicated to providing education to the public and professionals and providing scholarships from the EDRS Treatment Fund for California residents in need of eating disorder treatment. EDRS President Haleh Kashani will speak about the mission of the organization and an auction will be held.

The EDRS Treatment fund works to help offset costs associated with treatment and lets those seeking treatment for an eating disorder recover without destroying their financial stability. With costs for inpatient treatment ranging from $500 to $2,000 per day, and the normal length of stay 60 to 90 days, this combined with outpatient treatment, including therapy and medical monitoring, can cost $100,000 or more. Eating disorders can be treated successfully, but only 1 in 10 people with eating disorders receive treatment, and many times this is because of the high cost associated with trying to get help.

And with an estimated 10 million women and one million men suffering from eating disorders, according to the National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA), awareness efforts and access to treatment are critical to save lives. EDRS is dedicated to promoting community awareness, professional education and collaboration, with the goal of supporting individuals and families on their path to healing and recovery. Established in 2005, EDRS provides assistance to individuals in need of financial support for treatment, and most of these funds are generated through donations and ongoing fundraising activities such as this upcoming luncheon. This year so far, they have provided scholarships for six women in need of treatment, tripling the number of individuals supported from the year before.

"EDRS provided me the scholarship money I needed to get help for my anorexia and bulimia about three years ago," said EDRS scholarship recipient Lindsey. "There are not a lot of resources out there, and EDRS was instrumental in providing me with support through their community outreach, as well as the financial help for me to find lifelong recovery." Lindsey is now a therapist intern, with a specialty in treating eating disorders, and gives her time and resources back to assist EDRS in its mission to help those struggling with eating disorders. "Without EDRS, I wouldn't be where I am today, and now I can give back to EDRS with my time and expertise as a therapist," said Lindsey. "Events like the one coming up are instrumental for EDRS to raise money for scholarship funds, like the one that helped me."

Timberline Knolls, a residential treatment center for girls and women struggling with eating disorders, addictions, mood disorders and co-occurring disorders, and La Ventana, both a PHP/day treatment program with complimentary housing and an intensive outpatient program for both male and female adults and adolescents, will be co-sponsoring the luncheon. Melissa Rocchi, Program Development Coordinator and Manager of Expressive Therapies for Timberline Knolls, and Dr. Christine Pappas, Clinical Director for La Ventana San Francisco, will be presenting during the event, and educating attendees on different aspects of eating disorders.

"We are very thankful to Timberline Knolls and La Ventana for co-sponsoring this luncheon, and choosing EDRS as the beneficiary," said Dr. Kashani, president of EDRS. "It is through awareness efforts and community outreach that we can continue to educate the community on the prevalence of eating disorders. Recovery is possible, with a support system and access to treatment - which is the mission of EDRS."

Donations at the luncheon are encouraged. For more information or to donate please contact EDRS at www.edrs.net or 415-898-9839.
