  • (1888PressRelease) June 28, 2013 - This summer, eating fresh and locally grown produce will be much easier for faculty, staff, and students of Babson College who are coming together to launch Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) on campus. Through their initiative, the MayaPapaya CSA program will deliver shares of fresh organic produce to Babson directly from local farm for the CSA participants.

Lorien Romito, who recently joined Babson in the Glavin Office of Multicultural and International Education, had previously participated in a CSA at Endicott College and was looking to join one at Babson. "When I found out that Babson didn't have a CSA, I reached out to the Sustainability Office to ask about starting one."

Through the CSA model, participants invest in "shares" of a season of produce at a local farm, and, in return, receive weekly deliveries of produce throughout the season. This model connects the consumer directly with the farm. At Babson, faculty, staff, and students are all welcome to join the Maya Papaya CSA.

"We were very excited when Lorien contacted us. Sustainability at Babson is all about collaboration, and a faculty, staff, and student-supported CSA program was an excellent idea for Babson" said Dallase Scott, of the Babson Sustainability Office. Working together with Lorien, the program was promoted and the minimum number of participants was quickly met."

All across the Babson campus there are staff, students and faculty tackling issues of sustainability and resource efficiency and working to solve these integrated challenges. Ranked #7 for sustainability in the nation by Bloomberg BusinessWeek, Babson already has a robust set of sustainability initiatives in place. The incitation of the CSA provides Babson with a perfect opportunity to further advance their support of bringing locally and ethically sourced food to campus.

With the growing season in full swing, participation is closed for this season. However, if you are interested in participating in next year's CSA, please email sustainability ( @ ) babson dot edu dot
