  • (1888PressRelease) March 15, 2011 - Everett, WA - Archbishop Murphy High School of Everett, WA announced today two members of the Class of 2011 have been honored with the title of Semifinalist for a National Merit Scholarship from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

    Students Amy Anne Purdy and Elaine Hy Nguyen are semifinalists for approximately 8,400 National Merit Scholarships, worth more than $36 million dollars. They advance to the Finalist level based upon their cumulative GPAs and SAT scores. In May, 2011 the National Merit Scholarship Corporation will announce the Finalists.

    Additionally, five seniors were named Commended Students: Stephen Carratt, Michael Elhardt, Kennan Mighell, Kieran Ryan, and Justine Stewart.

    On September 15, 2010 the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists were announced by the officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing and approximately half of the Finalists will be awarded a National Merit Scholarship, earning the title of Merit Scholar.

    About 1.5 million juniors in 22,000 high schools entered the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors.
