  • (1888PressRelease) October 21, 2011 - Anglo American has joined forces with the Chilean Embassy to showcase the first ever international cultural exhibition during Heritage month. This exhibition will provide a rare opportunity for the country to witness captivating and culturally significant artwork from both South Africa and Chile.

This cultural collaboration will showcase Chilean photographer, Luis Hernàn Herreros' photography of mining and related landscapes in Chile, while renowned South African artist, Mbongeni Buthelezi will display some of his widely acclaimed artworks. The exhibition will take place at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Newtown, Johannesburg, and will be open to the public on 22 September until 6 October 2011.

Herreros' photographs reveal stunning portraits of the mining landscape at Anglo American's Chilean operations. Besides portraying broad and dynamic visuals of the mines, the images also illustrate the scenic beauty near the mines, and highlight the range of biodiversity in the area.

Buthelezi is truly an innovative and unique artist, with his pieces being predominantly constructed using recycled plastic. His artwork on display will depict scenes from township life, self-portraits, as well as abstract pieces.

Mary Jane Morifi, Executive Head: Corporate Affairs at Anglo American`s Platinum business says that the exhibition not only pays tribute to the fact that September is heritage month in South Africa, but it will also showcase Anglo American`s global impact.

Morifi adds that Chile remains strategic for Anglo American with six of its operations being based in that country. Chilean Ambassador to South Africa, Francisco Marabio concurs, noting that the exhibition came about owing to Chile's strong links to the company.

"Chile has traditionally had close ties to Anglo American, and much like Chile, South Africa is predominantly a mining country. Therefore, through the exhibition, we want to demonstrate the common interests between our countries, and further strengthen our social, diplomatic and political ties."
