An Increase of 19.3% in the Incoming Tourism to Egypt in May 2012

  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) September 04, 2012 - The Egyptian Central Administration for Mobilization and Statistics has noted that Egypt has welcomed around 846,000 tourists in May 2012 from different nationalities in comparison with around 706,000 tourists in May 2011 with an increase of 19.3%.

    However, the Administration has also noted that the numbers of tourists visiting Egypt has not yet reached the numbers achieved in 2010, before the Egyptian revolution of the 25th of January.

    The number of tourists that visited Egypt in May 2010 was around 1198,000 exceeding one million and a half tourists, a number that was never achieved in May 2011 or May 2012.

    The Administration of Mobilization and Statistics has added, in its report concerning the incoming tourism in Egypt during the month of May 2012, that the number of nights spent by the tourists in May 2012 was around 9 million and 800,000 nights in comparison to 7 million and 359,000 nights in May 2011 with an increase of 33.8%.

    The same as the number of tourists, the number of night spent by tourists in Egypt in May 2011 and May 2012 never achieved the number in May 2010 which was around 11 Million and 135,000 nights with a decrease of 11.6% in comparison to May 2012.

    Concerning the countries and the regions where tourists who visited Egypt came from the most, the report of the Administration has stated that Western Europe came in the first position, then Eastern Europe, and then the region of the Middle East and the same goes for the number of nights as well.

    The average number of nights that tourists spent in Egypt in May 2012 increased to become 11, 8 nights in comparison to 10, 9 nights in May 2011 according to the report of the Administration of Mobilization and Statistics.

    Moreover, the report has also stated that the percentage of the Arabian tourists have also increased by 10.2% in May 2012 with a total number of 168,000 tourists in comparison to 152,000 in May 2011.

    The same goes for the number of nights spend by Arabian tourists that reached 2.4 million nights in May 2012 in comparison to 2 million nights in May 2011 with an increase in the percentage that reached 20.8%.

    603 Thousand Tourists Visited the Region of the Red Sea in Egypt during May and Mid June.

    The number of tourists visiting the region of the Red Sea in Egypt, through the airports of Hurghada and Marsa Alam, has remarkably increased in the months of May and June 2012.

    The Head of the Internal Tourism of the Egyptian Tourism Authority Mr. Magdi Selim stated that the number of tourists that came to the region of the Red Sea during the months of May and June 2012 has reached 603,000 in comparison to 535,000 in the same period in the year 2011.

    Selim added that the percentage of occupancy in the region of the Red Sea in May and June 2012 has reached around 61% with the number of nights reaching 2.3 million nights in comparison to May and June 2011 that reached a percentage of 57% and a number of nights that was around 2.4 million nights.

    Selim noted that the Russian tourists came in the first position in the number of tourists coming to the Hurghada Airport with the arrival of 179,000 Russian tourists and the Germans came in the second position with around 113,000 arriving in the Hurghada and the Marsa Alam airports in May and June 2012.

    Concerning the Marsa Alam International Airport, the Italian tourists came in the first position with the arrival of around 45,000 tourists and the Germans came in the second place, the same as Hurghada, with 13,000 arriving in the Marsa Alam Airport in May and June 2012.

    The Director of the Office of the Red Sea of the Egyptian Tourism Authority, Mr. Ahmed Mostafa, said that this remarkable increase in the number of tourists arriving in the Red Sea was a consequence of how tourists and foreigners in particular knew that the safety and the security conditions in Egypt are improving gradually.

    Mostafa added that Egypt is expecting even a greater increase in the numbers of tourists who will be visiting Egypt in the coming period.

    The Portsaid Port Witnesses a Remarkable Increase in the Arrival of Large Cruise Ships

    In one of the signs that the Egyptian tourism will regain its normal position in the region, the port of Portsaid in Northern Egypt has witnessed the arrival of the Nile Cruise Ship "Aida Diva" that hosed 2640 tourists coming from Germany in the 9th of June 2012.

    1400 from the German tourists who arrived in Portsaid had a one day trip to visit the most important highlights of Cairo while the rest enjoyed their time in the city of Portsaid.

    From his side, the Head of the Internal Tourism of the Egyptian Tourism Authority Mr. Magdi Selim said that there is a notable increase in the arrivals of cruise ships in Egypt especially in Alexandria and Portsaid.

    An Egyptian Shoura Council Member sates that South Sinai Will Witness a notable Improvement in the Tourism Sector in the Coming Period

    The Egyptian Shoura Council member, Mohamed Hassan, stated that South Sinai in general and Sharm El Sheikh in particular will be greatly enhanced during the coming period especially after the stepping down of the previous regime.

    Hassan had this announcement during the visit of the visit of the Committee of Human Development and Local Administration of the Shoura Council to the city of Sharm El Sheikh to assess the needs of the citizens and the city overall. The visit has also included the city of Dahab, the Natural Protected Area of Ras Mohamed, and Oyoun Mousa in Sinai.

    Hassan added that the touristic area of Oyoun Mousa or the Wells of Moses will undergo an extensive regular restoration process.
