  • (1888PressRelease) August 15, 2012 - One of the leading coupon code websites in the US has conducted a survey of 2,105 American parents, aged 30 and over and with children still in education, to discover if their aspirations for their children were different depending on the sex of the child and whether or not they would want their child to be top of their class, a successful pro-athlete, or best looking.

The study, conducted by www.CouponCodes4u.com, formed part of research of American parents and their preferences when it came to their children's education. Respondents were asked if they had a girl, a boy, or both, to which 34% said just a girl or girls, 31% said just a boy/boys and 35% said 'both'.

Respondents were then asked to choose whether or not they would prefer their child to be a straight A student, a pro-level athlete or the best looking child and explain why. According to the research, 71% of respondents with a daughter wanted her to be a "straight A student", while 12% chose the option of "pro-level athlete". Only 9% were concerned about their daughter being the 'best looking' while the remaining respondents with daughters selected 'other'.

When looking into reasons why, 54% of those who said it was most important for them that their daughter was attractive said it was because they'd be 'more appealing to a wealthy man', suggesting they'd have a more affluent future. The majority of those who said being a 'straight A student' was what they wanted the most for their daughter, 61%, said it was because they would then go on to 'earn more money'; while 59% of those who wanted their daughter to be a 'pro-level athlete' thought this would bring them 'fame and money', meaning financial benefit was at the forefront of most parents' minds when selecting their choice.

According to the research, respondents who had cited that they had a son chose slightly different responses. When asked which option they would prefer, 75% of respondents cited that they wanted their son to be a pro-level athlete, with 'looks' being the main concern for 14% and only 11% of respondents stating their son being a 'straight A student' was a priority for them.

When looking into reasons why, 63% of those who said it was most important for them that their son was a 'pro-level' athlete said it was because they'd potentially go on to 'earn more money', while the majority of those who said being good looking was what they wanted the most for their son, 55%, said it was because they would 'generally go further in life'. 62% of those who wanted their son to be a 'straight A student' thought this would enable them to 'earn more money' in future; meaning financial benefit was also at the forefront of most parents' minds when selecting their choice for their sons.

Mark Pearson, Chairman of CouponCodes4u.com, said the following about the findings:

"As a parent, it is only natural to want what is best for your children, whether it is to succeed in a chosen field, or be popular in school as a skilled networker. However, as the recession still looms large in today's news, we were curious to survey parents to see what would be the most important trait for their child to get ahead during and after their school years."

    He continued:

"When looking into the reasons why most parents selected the choices they did for their sons and daughters, it almost always came back to money and them wanting financial security for their children, or for themselves through their children's earnings later in life. I would suggest that many parents are also hoping to live out their own hopes and dreams through their kids, such as becoming a top athlete or top of the class because they didn't when they were younger."
