Allstate's "DSGN8D TXTR" Aims to Curb Distracted Driving Deaths

Top Quote Movement offers solution for saving lives: appoint a designated texter. End Quote
  • (1888PressRelease) January 28, 2011 - NORTHBROOK, Ill. - Allstate today announced the expansion of their "X the TXT" initiative - urging young people, their friends and families to appoint a DSGN8D TXTR before getting behind the wheel.

"Just like the 'designated driver' movement, this is about Americans taking responsibility behind the wheel in order to save lives," said Joan Walker, senior vice president of corporate relations at Allstate. "By choosing a DSGN8D TXTR, drivers can keep two eyes on the road and their thumbs off the cell phone."

DSGN8TD TXTR - the person empowered to text on behalf of a driver - was first introduced by Allstate this summer as part of their sponsorship of the Jonas Brothers' "Road Dogs" softball tour.

During Road Dogs games, the Jonas Brothers spoke about the importance of appointing a DSGN8D TXTR, and game attendees could personalize key chains and t-shirts with the names of their appointed friends or family members. More than 7,000 key chains were distributed and almost 15,000 people pledged not to text and drive by adding their thumbprint to the X the TXT banner on-site at each game during the 12-city Road Dogs tour.

X the TXT is a national movement created and led by Allstate to educate teens and their families about the dangers of texting while driving and encouraging them to make a public pledge not to do so. This campaign is part of Allstate's broader efforts to make our roads safer, especially for young drivers.

Since Allstate launched X the TXT in the Fall of 2009, more than 100,000 Americans have made the pledge at live pledge events across the country or online at facebook.com/XtheTXT. In addition to the pledges of the Jonas Brothers, Jordin Sparks, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, Meredith Vieira and Tom Joyner, others have pledged not to text and drive.

Texting is one of the most dangerous distractions facing drivers today, particularly among teens. And car crashes are the number one killer of teens, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), with teens crashing four times more often than any other age group. A recent Allstate Foundation study found that 49 percent of driving teens admit to being extremely distracted by texting and instant messaging while driving. NHTSA reports driver distraction contributes to 25 percent of all police-reported traffic crashes.

An Allstate DSGN8D TXTR holiday program will kick off in late November. To take the pledge not to text and drive, or for more information about the X the TXT initiative, visit www.facebook.com/XtheTXT .
