  • Salinas, CA (1888PressRelease) July 11, 2012 - The 76th Annual Monterey County Fair is offering a special showcase for children ages 9 to 19 who raise quality livestock through their 4-H and FFA animal projects throughout Monterey County. The prestigious Junior Livestock Auction, that promotes agriculture and supports Monterey County youth education, will be held during the Fair on Saturday, September 1st at 10:00 AM. The public is invited to attend and purchase an animal which will support these programs that teach children the responsibilities of caring for animals and spark an entrepreneurial spirit. The purchasers, which can consist of a group that puts their money together, can keep the meat from the animal or choose to donate it for resale. All of the young exhibitors have devoted hard work and energies to their project animals, and their rewarding experiences will remain with them for a lifetime. FFA and 4-H members work on their animals for months, learning to care for and raise them. They learn the essential part that market animals play in our daily lives. This year, a special pig, "Spanky", raised by Monterey County Fair Heritage Foundation $2012 Scholarship Winner, Cheyenna Sievers of Spring 4-H, will be auctioned off to benefit the newly formed Monterey County Fair Heritage Foundation so come out and bid on "Spanky The Heritage Pig." For more information regarding the Junior Livestock Auction, please call (831) 372-5863.

The week of the Junior Livestock Auction participant starts with bringing in the animals via trailers on Tuesday, August 28th, before the Fair is open to the public. The animals are weighed in, inspected and tagged. Throughout the week, members are at the Fair for most of the day, grooming, feeding and practicing with their animals for show or auction in hopes of winning blue ribbon awards. On Saturday, members get up early to wash their animals for the big day when livestock is auctioned off to the highest bidder. A prize-winning animal usually brings more than the average price. Proceeds from the auction are distributed as prize money to the participants. Support our youth and also purchase some outstanding quality meat by being part of the Junior Livestock Auction.

The 76th Annual Monterey County Fair will open Wednesday, August 29th and continue through Monday, September 3rd. Advance tickets, with Internet special prices, are now available online at www.montereycountyfair.com. For more information, call (831) 372-5863.
