  • Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) September 25, 2012 - Film going audiences love a good scare, and Lionsgate Films' "The Possession," from producer Sam Raimi proved that once again over the Labor Day weekend by snagging the number one spot at the Hollywood box office.

There have been many films about demons and possessions, but this is one of the few that relates the story of The Dybbuk Box, which holds an evil spirit known in the Jewish folklore of Eastern Europe.

Based on true events detailed in a Los Angeles Times article from 2004, the film tells the story of a cursed antique box that has trapped the dangerous entity, and the teenaged girl that obtains the box at a yard sale, becoming possessed by the spirit that lies within it.

Danish director Ole Bornedal was tapped to direct his first Hollywood production, after helming several horror and thriller productions in his native Denmark. Producer Sam Raimi's company Ghost House released Bornedal's film "The Substitute" on video. Actors Geoffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen, The Losers) and Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer) star as the possessed girl's divorced parents.

The original Los Angeles Times news article from 2004 told the strange tale of the antique box and how it was auctioned online. The screenplay for the film added the fictional element of the fractured family that must come together to fight for the fate of their daughter's soul.

Audience reaction on the internet has been intense, with 88% of users at the website RottenTomatoes.com who responded to the film claiming just prior to its opening weekend that they wanted to see it.

For actor Nana Gbewonyo, this is the first horror film he has appeared in. After being a part of such box office hits as Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino" and "Coach Carter," with Samuel L. Jackson. Gbewonyo found this film to be a great challenge. "I am definitely a horror movie watcher, and a Sam Raimi fan, so this was an awesome project to be a part of," Gbewonyo said.

Gbewonyo is working on several new projects for upcoming release right now. He will be detailing these when he speaks to celebrity interviewer Cosandra Calloway on her show Callywood, at 11:40 a.m. Pacific Time, on September 8, 2012. The show will be available for listening on the internet at http://www.blogtalkradio.com/callywood/2012/09/08/callywod-live.
