  • (1888PressRelease) March 09, 2016 - "Sixty Shades of Grey Hair" by Kate Condliffe, About the Book: "Sixty Shades of Grey Hair" tells the story of seven days in the life of Kath Goodwood, along with six snapshots from the life of another woman, Mary.

64 year-old Kath sees her mother's face every time she looks in the mirror and hears her mother's voice, commenting on her appearance. Kath hasn't kept up with all the latest leaps in technology and is shocked by the manners of young people whilst admiring their ability to multi-task.

A chance meeting with an old boyfriend and the appearance in the streets around her of a woman who looks vaguely familiar combine to prompt Kath to face the buried events she has kept locked up inside, which have shaped her life and her character.

    About the Author:
Kate Condliffe was born in 1948, in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, in a very different world from the one we inhabit today. At that point, she was Kathleen Atkinson, was briefly Kate Atkinson (sadly not that one) and eventually Kate Condliffe. She gradually moved southwards, first to Oxford, then to North London and finally to South London. She was a teacher in Hackney for over thirty years, retiring from her job as Deputy Headteacher in the early years of the disastrous in-roads that have been made by a variety of governments into the education system and the role of teachers.

She currently lives in South East London with her partner of over thirty years. ('Over thirty years' seems to be something of a recurring theme.) Having loved reading all her life and talked about writing something for most of it, 'Over Sixty Shades of Grey Hair!' on Kindle was her debut! Having taken that step, she wanted to feel a paper book, having rarely used a Kindle herself, so she took the next step and 'Sixty Shades of Grey Hair' was the result. It differs only in the more careful proofreading and a slightly clearer ending, but it's a 'real' book.

    Excerpt from the Book:
"It wasn't that she felt old as such, but it didn't help that every time she glanced in a mirror or caught sight of herself in a shop window, she saw her mother's face looking back, complete with jowls, sagging, lines, crepe and a sullen, almost vacant expression. When she looked a second time, having fixed her expression and changed the angle of her chin, she didn't look quite so surly, but she still looked pretty old. 'But you are old,' her mother-face reminded her. 'Only in my early sixties,' she countered. 'Early, what's early?' 'Early is 60 to 64, mid is 65 to 68 and late is 69. Anyway, 60 is the new 40!'"
